Movie News 09/03/09

  • Daily tidbits of movie news from across the globe (well, mostly just Hollywood stuff, if I’m honest)…

  • Dakota Fanning joins cast of Twilight sequel, New Moon, as a vamp. I still doubt I’ll see it.
  • New bunch of Wolverine pictures have been released. Check them out here.

  • Can’t say I’m impressed with Gambit, but Liev Schreiber’s Sabretooth more than makes up for it.

Gambit

  • The rather disturbing and purposely controversial title, Rape: A Love Story, will no doubt garner a lot of attention. Based on a story by Joyce Carol Oates, the movie will tell the story of a young mother who is brutally gang-raped and left for dead, in an attack witnessed by her 12 year-old daughter. Abigail Breslin and Maria Bello are joined by Samuel L. Jackson as the investigating cop.

  • Despite the fact that the new Friday the 13th remake was critically panned, it did well enough in the box office to have a sequel greenlit. Another horror classic being remade, A Nightmare on Elm Street, starts shooting in the next few weeks.
  • Another couple of remakes in the works – Will Smith and his son, Jaden, are bringing back the Karate Kid and it seems the Neverending Story truly is neverending.

  • Dreamgirls writer/director Bill Condon is planning a biopic of Richard Pryor with Eddie Murphy in the lead role. Can you smell the Oscars?

  • New Star Trek Trailer

Wolverine I’m kinda worried about, because while it seems they stayed *relatively* loyal to the comics with Wolverine and Gambit (even though he’s only in it for about 15 mins apparently), from what I’ve read they may have royally f***ed up Deadpool, which is a shame ’cause he’s a brilliant character, and ryan Reynolds is the perfect actor for him…

…and yeah, WTF is with all the remakes?? It’s kinda getting out of hand….

With X-Men there’s so much source material to draw on, there will inevitably be a lot left out. The fanboys will never be completely satisfied. As long as they make an entertaining movie with something of an edge, it’ll be fine.

Wolverine is the best character from the X-Men films and it makes sense to give him his own spin off. I’d be more worried about the follow-up – Magneto.
