17Meteor Ireland Music Awards 2009
March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day, one of the biggest going-out days of the year in Ireland, where there’s parties, parades, events and craic agus ceol. Where will I be? I’m going to the Meteors in the RDS. I expect it to look very green.
This year, our own Rick O’Shea is nominated in the Best National DJ category and will undoubtedly be Tweeting (@rickoshea) his way through the show. Personally, I’m looking forward to catching performances by Sharon Shannon, Imelda May, The Blizzards and James Morrison. Sharon Shannon is actually being awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. Odd, seeing as she’s only 40, but who am I to argue?
Delighted to see Duke Special, Camille O’Sullivan, Nick Cave and Choice Music Prize winners Jape nominated for awards. And though they’re up against Take That, The Killers, Kings of Leon and Coldplay, I’d love to see Fleet Foxes get Best International Album. Their self-titled debut, is one of the best and most unusual albums I’ve heard in recent years.
One of the highlights of last year was the presence of Charlize Theron with husband Stuart Townsend. It’ll be interesting to see if this years awards can attract any international stars. Indeed, can it attract anyone this year? Judging by the amount of empty seats last year and the choice of date for the event, I’d wonder if the show will lose out to the many other Patrick’s Day events.
So, that’s what I’m up to for St. Patrick’s Day. What are you lot doing?
Sleeping probably ?
Although I am hoping that Mark Noble (FM104) will win in Best Regional DJ. Otherwise he won’t shut up about it for the next few weeks ?
@Chris Do you not think Dermot, Dave & Siobhan have it in the bag?
Given I only ever really listen to FM104 (with the exception of the odd time I tune into Rick ? ), I can’t say much about the competition…
Ah feck off!
And are Charlize Theron and Townsend actuully married now?
@Lottie I dunno to be honest. Here’s what Townsend said:
@Darren – Ah. Is that how it works. It has elements of Cowen in it. I consider the government to be functioning efficiently so therefore it is.
Nope. That’s really not how it works at all.
Fucks sake, they’ve been going out about 10 years and they still haven’t given anyone a day out. For shame.
@VL You talking about Townsend and Theron or Lottie and I?
Oh live Tweets – that’ll be handy. I shall look out for those.
Lads, much as I’d love to I won’t forever be know as “yer man who was on the phone everytime the cameras showed him on the telly. Will try a bit.
And Darren, of course we’re all talking about you and Lottie!!
My first comment on Culch.ie!
Wham.
I’m going to Bray for the parade, mainly to start fights but secondarily to teach my youngest how to push a pram with style.
I’ll see you in the emergency room.
@lecraic Sarcasm?
@Rick Keep waiting…
@Maxi And what a fine comment it is.
@K8 You can push a pram with style?
No no I can’t, not yet. I’ve yet to buy the hoop earrings.
Seeing as we’re new to the area, I thought I might as well introduce the young wan to local culture and its spandex charms… you’re never too young for that.
@Darren Charlize and Stuart of course! Celeb weddings give me a reason to by OK magazine on occasion. They’ve swindled me, bastards.
@K8, you should just whoop and cheer with the rest of the crowd. Braying will just attract funny looks.
nope, none intended. I’d have been interested to get the winners as it happened and see did Rick win.
