Casablanca classic

Last night I had the great pleasure of seeing Casablanca on the big screen, in The Screen cinema on D’Olier Street.

Set during World War II, it focuses on a man torn between, in the words of one character, love and virtue. He must choose between his love for a woman and helping her and her Resistance leader husband escape from the Vichy-controlled Moroccan city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Nazis.

The Hollywood glamour of the beautiful Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman), the stunning clothes, the multi cultural setting in Casablanca where many people are waiting to escape to America via the one flight a day to Lisbon, the backdrop of World War II, the soft focus shots on the beautiful girl and her big, sad eyes, the stolen moments together, the heartbreak, the drama!

Casablanca won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture despite the fact that it was not expected to be anything out of the ordinary while it was being made.

It’s fairytale-like and alien to the movies being made these days and that is one of the things I love about it. There’s no reliance on special effects, on wowing the audience with action, fire, explosions or bloodshed-it’s just a great story about people. I saw Casablanca for the first time only a few years ago. Seeing it on the big screen, hearing just how many lines are still quoted, re-quoted and mis-quoted to this day from it was nothing short of a treat. As well as hearing Sam play this of course 🙂

For those of you who have yet to see Casablanca - see it. For those of you who loved Casablanca and all things Hollywood glamour and black and white on the screen…here’s something you’ll be interested to know.
