3Music for The Golden Vale
On 4 September next, the National Chamber Choir will perform in Cashel Cathedral, Cashel, Co. Tipperary.
Music for Tipperary are presenting Music for the Golden Vale featuring contemporary Irish works from Ian Wilson, Rhona Clarke and Elaine Agnew-RTE lyric fm’s 2009 (and first ever) composer in residence - as well as pieces by Lesur and Palestrina.
Conductor, James Wood will be joined by traditional sean-nós singer, Iarla Ó Lionáird and the world premiere of The Beloved and Her Lover, a specially commissioned work by Ian Wilson, will also be performed on the evening.
“The Beloved and Her Lover is based on the dialogue between the Beloved and her Lover in the Song of Songs. These exotic and sensuous poems have inspired composers for centuries, and in this programme you can hear contemporary settings of these celebrated poems not only by Ian Wilson, but also by Elaine Agnew and Daniel Lesur set against Palestrina’s classic and timeless settings of the very same texts. The programme is complemented by Rhona Clarke’s setting of The Kiss by Ulick O’Connor.”
It sounds like a really interesting evening, just a shame it is so far away from home for me. Tickets aren’t too pricey either at €15 and €10. They will be available on the door or if you’d like to purchase in advance please email [email protected].
You can find out more information about the performance and the performers on the Music For Tipperary website.

Should be interesting concert, I like Iarla Ó Lionáird’s vocals with the Afro Celt Sound System. I am unfamiliar with the composers, so will have to check them out. I’m also fan of Anúna’s music. Will not be able to attend as I’m on the other side the pond, so looking forward to a review of the concert by Niamh.
Séamus, thanks for your comment. The concert does sound interesting but unfortunately I will not be making it to Cashel either for the concert…hopefully some nice Culch.ie reader will go and maybe tell us how it was?
Welcome, Niamh, and yeah, hope that someone on Culch.ie makes it to the show, be interesting to hear about it..
