Welcome: The Spirit of Folk, Festival 2013
This weekend sees the very much anticipated return of The Spirit of folk Festival 2013. Culch.ie has been and gone there since it began way back in 2011 and this it’s 3rd year is one I simply cannot wait for.
I’ll grant you #SOF13 is probably not the type of gig where you’d spot that many fake tan pushers, complete with Gucci aftersahve flavoured Beckham Wellies, because I’m worth it ? More this gig really is about The Spirit of Folk.
For me, for us, it is the place where myself and Brian Greene were made to feel part of The Family in 2011 as they aired on The Sodshow. And we had tea there. It is were Anthony McGuinness and I first met The Hot Sprockets. It is were Darren and Ellie went shamanic drumming and Brian interviewed a viking. It is bring your own Germania beer, a hug on arrival and a tear in my eye, every time I leave it.
In a mild twist this year the loveliest festival I have ever been to has gone from 2 to 3 to 1 days. And, with another twist, they brought it right the way back to the people and very simply added more loveliness. A Whelans gig later and Q new music to the scene from Moxie, Miriam Donohue and The Cujo Family.
Along with them playing to win The Spirit of Folk Awards are other bands that we now know and highly recommend, including Hidden Highways, Bunoscionn and the legendary brothers that are Lynched - great to see yiz back. Shite video. Mea culpa. Cracking choon.
The Feastival, happening on the 21st of September will also play host to an eclectic array of folky activities including Archery, Storytelling in a candle lit cairn headlined by the famous Seanachi Eddie Lenihan, Mind, body, spirit workshops, Bushcraft, Bat Walks and experimental archeology. There will also be a kid’s area with clowning workshops, Imagination Gym and Puppet making. Not to be missed also is the infamous “Hall of Heroes” tent.
Also and fresh out of Electric Picnic - My favourite interview, band, loveliest folk, ever ? Bunoscionn. Legends. Can. Not. Wait. Kildare.
Tickets for the day are €40. It is overnight camping and do bring your own. I and we will be there.
