The first trailer for Supergirl is out and is as cheesy and awesome as you can imagine

“It’s not a bird. It’s not a plane. It’s not a man. It’s Supergirl.”

Like, come on! How not to love that tagline? CBS released today an extended 6 minutes trailer of the newly picked-up show about Kal-El’s (AKA Superman, Clark Kent, etc) cousin, Kara Zor-El, trying to make an under-the-radar-living in the fictional city of National City, after being told for years by her foster family on Earth to hide her alien abilities, akin to those displayed by the cape crusader often refered as the Man of Steel.

Unlike sibling show “Smallville” (long live Tom Welling’s chest), “Supergirl” looks like is not shying away from her superpowers and abilities in her first-shot at the small screen. Previous encarnations of the character are limited to an ill-fated film starring 80’s teen icon Helen Slater (known for her pixie haircut in “The Legend of Billie Jean”) and cameos in animated features. The Warner Bros produced TV show looks to have reimagined the origin story for Supergirl first as a “The Devil Wears Prada” meets comic book superheroes kind of a affair, but it promises to take a more existentialist turn, after Kara is being forced to expose her powers to avoid a disaster on the 8’oclock news.

What I can take from the trailer is that the producers and writers (Greg Berlanti, Ali Adler, Sarah Schecter and Andrew Kreisberg of “The Flash” and “Arrow” fame) are self-aware of the comic campiness and the girl power narrative of this character and I couldn’t be more excited. In fairness, sometimes trailers are better than the actual production but here I’m hoping to get a new Buffy and not a new Charmed.

“Supergirl” will premiere next November on CBS.
