National Youth Jazz Ensemble. Live at The Sugar Club

national youth jazz ensemble

I don’t know much about jazz. In fact, it pretty much only reminds me that Miles Davis moment from Jerry Maguire. Jaaaaaaaaaaaaz. You may throw many sticks and stones now. What I do know is; and apols if it sounds like we’re biggin’ one up here, but…. Oisín Murtagh who is a part of the NYJE, is also much famed for being one part of Booka Brass Band (recently played Night For Ray at The Sugar Club) and he was also a part of No Bread who might be better known to attendees of the very much loved and again upcoming Spirit of Folk Fest (2015).

Anyhow….. based on that; my mind may have slightly changed.

Here’s what the NYJE have to say:

The National Youth Jazz Ensemble are set to take the The Sugar Club by storm this coming Monday August 10th for their debut performance. The NYJE is a new Dublin based big-band jazz ensemble formed last month bringing together some of Ireland’s finest jazz musicians. Aimed at those in the midst of, or who have completed third level education one of the ensemble’s chief aims is to provide a platform through which young musicians can excel. The NYJE’s repertoire will comprise of early swing, modern big band charts, and just about everything in between as well as performances of specially commissioned compositions.

Founded by Kevin Hanafin, Oisin Murtagh, Paul Kiernan and David Conway, and with the support of the Royal Irish Academy of Music, the birth of this project will see structures put in place to ensure a continuous programme of learning for Ireland’s finest jazz musicians. By providing a regular rehearsal schedule, ongoing peer support and opportunities to perform at some of Ireland’s best venues, the NYJE will be the ultimate vehicle to launch a career in the world of jazz.

The ensemble’s first gig will take place in Dublin’s Sugar Club, on the 10th of August. The performance will feature the Irish premier of Duke Ellington’s ‘Nutcracker Suite’ and Bob Curnow’s arrangements of pieces by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays as played by the LA Big Band. Tickets are €10 and are available from http://www.thesugarclub.com/listings/event/national-youth-jazz-ensemble. €5 concession available on the door.
