Win a place at Digital Detox at Dunderry House on 5th December
We’re mad about Spirit of Folk (the annual festival for all things folky) and this comes from the same stable so read on.
On the 5th of December, Digital Detox Ireland will host their third retreat ‘Switch off Saturday’, a one day retreat from digital technology in a restored Georgian estate, set on 25 idyllic acres of park and lakeland in Co. Meath. The day will include a mixture of workshops that focus on mental health and well being, creativity, and human connection. Starting the day with a warm, communal breakfast, workshops will begin at 10am, beginning with yoga, laughter yoga, mandala making and a hearty lunch.
In the evening, renowned Irish storyteller, Aideen Mc Bride will host a storytelling workshop inside a replica megalithic cairn, just before the famous crew from Soda Bread Box will give people one hour of complete freedom to dance in the dark, with literally nobody watching! Emily Duffy initially created the project in March 2014, having noticed her friends over use of their devices, along with her own. She researched some of the effects of digital dependence, learning that digital addiction has the same physical attributes of other addictions, such as drugs, gambling, cigarettes and alcohol. Digital addiction can lead to mood disorders, problems with emotional regulation, and a decrease in creativity and concentration.
Each workshop is designed to help participants free themselves from their digital devices and to boost human interaction, focus and creativity. ‘People can contact their friends and family if necessary, but otherwise, we encourage participants to surrender their phone for the day. After all, how often do we truly get that break?’
Participants can avail of the option to stay overnight, with extra yoga and breakfast included, or they can head home after the dancing and final evening snack.
The day costs €75 including all meals, activities and tuition, it’s €30 extra for B & B. Group discounts are available. To book a place, check out digitaldetox.info, email [email protected] or call 0469074455. Places are limited to 35 – so book early to avoid disappointment.

My favourite way to detox from digital is to lick the bathroom door&spend at least half an hour in a hot bath with Tom Waits crooning in the background…zone out bliss!
