Album Review: Nirvana Nevermind - 20th Anniversary Release, Deluxe Edition

When I was growing up there were two types of The Doors fans. Those who knew them [on vinyl] pre the movie and those who jumped on the bandwagon, very much the after party. Similarly, there are those who knew why my mate Stu wore a beano jumper and those who bought the T-shirt when Kurt Cobain [RIP] passed away.

For me [and I've said it before] Nirvana coming on the scene were very much

What the fook is that sound ?

I say that in the ‘make you sit up, take note and get excited‘ kind of a way. Something, that I have not seen since nor in between witnessing The White Stripes play Hotel Yorba with a broken string on Jools Holland for the first time. More than that, Nirvana were a sound that played from your bedroom was guaranteed to p’soff your Folks - in a damn those tennagers bad way. They, caused the kind of complaint you hear US of A Moms and Dads on reeling in the years type docu’s speak of Elvis when he was first seen shaking his hips on the tele-visual screen.

How history does repeat itself.

For me, Nirvana [ref lithium] were the reason I wore a white T Shirt and grey jumper with a bad leather jacket. It was Andy’s Mom and her chocolate cake in his Dads shed figuring out Polly on the guitar. It was my long hair, broken guitar strings and still being able to play the rift from About A Girl. Why did i live so far away from Waltons. It was growing up. And I loved it.

When you get an email in asking who wants to review Nirvana Nevermind - the answer in short is [unless you have lived in a cave most of your life, alongside Rick Astley] yes because I bought the cassette version instead of the vinyl when it first came out. Hindsight being 50:50 - damn you Walkman.

But what have I really got to review ? Not much you might say considering I know the album so well ? In a way yes - but The 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition comes with the following:

  • CD One - Original Album Remastered
  • CD Two - Smart studio Sessions/boombox rehearsals /BBC sessions
  • CD Three - the Devonshire Mixes

It contains 50 songs in total with for example, three versions of Polly, Come As You Are and Lithium to name a few. If your iPod is on shuffle and you’re at Grandma’s for Christmas you may be in trouble - but - getting on your families nerves aside [ history repeats iteslf yet again ? ] would I recommend I invest my spondulas in this re-release ? Without question, Yes. Like some sort of reliving my teenage youth metamorphosis of an archaeological dig, one cannot simply turn around and say

It’s just another viking discovery in Temple Bar…. we have some of their stuff already

For it’s not just a rehash of the same old. It’s not. It is Nirvana. It is Nevermind. The alternate versions, hearing them and knowing the difference is what it is all about. It is the reasons two fingers were given to Top of the Pops on BBC and understanding why. Like poetry and Teenage Kicks, it just made sense. And anyone who says different most probably has Ace of Base - The Best Of in their album collection.

I did it for The Beatles Anthology. Welcome Nirvana. There was always a place for you on my mantle.

one baby to another said I’m lucky to have met you
