So last night saw the premiere of the Simpsons Ireland special, on the so not Irish Sky1. It was an interesting episode, is really all I have to say about it. Nothing really too special, although there were a good few accurate bits, which seems as if they did actually do their research this time, unlike the previous St. Patrick’s Day special episode back in Season 8.
I fail to see how they could get across the country so much in what seemed like such a short space of time. They’re at the Blarney Stone, Giant’s Causeway, back in the village and everywhere else all within the space of the majority of the 22-minute episode. Of course, given it’s an animation it doesn’t need to follow the general rules of realism, but still…
One thing that was definitely off, it mainly the fact that it was an HD widescreen episode being broadcast during a period when all Sky still has is the 4:3 crappy quality stuff. A little out of context, wouldn’t you think? I did love how it tied in with the current situation of the country - very tech savvy and advanced, slightly liberal with homosexuality, and the smoking ban, which did have quite an impact of the plot. All in all though, it wasn’t as good as the classics. It seems after twenty years the well of story ideas are starting to run dry… When’s the next clip show going to inevitably happen?
However, the very cheap puns were still there. I mean, what ass seriously flies with Derry Air?
* dead silence, only broken by the crickets chirping and the tumbleweed floating by *
Ah-em, sorry. Byrne’s been rubbing off on me…
I didn’t touch you!!!
Ahem…but was it funny?
I can’t really say much about the amusement factor. It had a few jokes that cracked a grin, the typical bad puns and everything else. Largely disappointing.
Do you know if/when it’s repeated Chris? I’d like to see this one, not that I watch much of The Simpsons any more but they still get a giggle out of me when it’s not one I’ve seen a hundred times already!
I don’t know if it’s being repeated over here until Sky actually get to show it normally, but it’s being shown in the US this Sunday.
However, it seems as if the episode shown before it on Sky was the premiere of the season, so at minimum another 13 new episodes to go
Weirdly Niamh I think the older ones from the early series are still completely watchable but anything from the last ten years very, very poor…
It all went to hell when Brad Bird left…
I havent seen it yet, but most of what I’ve heard about it was that it was shit. But I’ll watch it anyway.
Regarding 4:3 sky1. What platform were you watching it on. SKy1 on a sky digibox/sky+/hd are all 16:9 and the hd box is obviously showing the hd version on Sky1 HD
I’m talking about the old 4:3 episodes of the Simpsons. They didn’t become 16:9 and HD until Season 20, Episode 9 - which is 5 episodes prior to this one, and won’t start showing on Sky1 for at least another 8 episodes.
Really poor. I wasn’t impressed at all! There was nothing really funny in it and unlike any of the good ones, the story line was all over the place. Looks like it was a very lame attempt at filling in a gap.
