Some Sad News

This is where the nerd in me comes out. I was saddened to hear the passing of Andy Hallett. I was am a huge Buffy fan and was a big fan of the spin-off show Angel too. One of the main characters in it was a singing green demon called Lorne. It was without a doubt Hallett‘s biggest role and though he was an accomplished musician, at the time of his death, aged only 33, it is for his 76 appearances in Joss Whedon’s supernatural show that he will be remembered. So, spare a thought for the young actor who died from heart failure after a five year battle.

The recent controversy over Picturegate transcended Conor Casby’s paintings. It revealed a national broadcaster in preemptive terror of the government; a meddling Government Press Office that overstepped the procedures the rest of us have to adhere to if we have a broadcasting complaint; and a Gardai that are clearly taking directions from murky corners of Irish politics. The full implications of a very strange week have yet to be teased out but many people are waking up to the rot in Irish political life and the episode has revealed some strange definitions of satire, and strange attitudes to the human body. If any of this concerns you, and as a citizen of a democracy it should, you should express that concern. The Leave Conor Casby Alone group on Facebook approaches 6,000 members, you might join that. You might voice your concerns to RTE [email protected] and/or the BCC http://www.bcc.ie/how_to_complaint/index.html. I’m encouraging … There’s more

Movie News 30/03/09

It’s 10 year since this week The Matrix was released. It’s easy to forget how important that film was. It brought effects and sci-fi storytelling into a new era. I’ll be watching the trilogy this week, methinks. Uma Thurman (Medusa), Pierce Brosnan (Chiron), Sean Bean (Zeus) and Kevin McKidd (Poseidon) have been cast in the Christopher Columbus’ fantasy adventure film Percy Jackson. The story follows Poseidon’s 12-year-old half-human son, who “embarks on a quest across modern-day America to save his mother, return Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt and prevent a deadly war between the gods.” Houdini is set to become an action hero. Based on a controversial novel about the magician’s life, plans are afoot to make an action movie with Houdini in the central role. Might be interesting… Ron Howard may be dipping his toes in horror next (as if The DaVinci Code wasn’t horrific enough) - he is looking … There’s more
