It’s 10 year since this week The Matrix was released. It’s easy to forget how important that film was. It brought effects and sci-fi storytelling into a new era. I’ll be watching the trilogy this week, methinks. Uma Thurman (Medusa), Pierce Brosnan (Chiron), Sean Bean (Zeus) and Kevin McKidd (Poseidon) have been cast in the Christopher Columbus’ fantasy adventure film Percy Jackson. The story follows Poseidon’s 12-year-old half-human son, who “embarks on a quest across modern-day America to save his mother, return Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt and prevent a deadly war between the gods.” Houdini is set to become an action hero. Based on a controversial novel about the magician’s life, plans are afoot to make an action movie with Houdini in the central role. Might be interesting… Ron Howard may be dipping his toes in horror next (as if The DaVinci Code wasn’t horrific enough) - he is looking … There’s more

Feathers And Fedoras

I’ve often wondered how you explain the world of burlesque and those that dress up, come and participate in an increasing number of evenings to those who have no idea what it’s like. Those who have preconceptions of it being about being sleazy, low or nasty… How about this? It’s feathers and fedoras, impossibly ornate corsets and multi-buttoned jackets and cravats, canes and elegance and a want to evoke a long gone era of something else. It’s showgirls and gentlemen in sharp suits and manners and theatre and looking as fabulous as you can while sipping the fruits of pitchers of cocktails. It’s glamour and effort and everyone looking the absolute best they do, ever. They are always the best nights out to be had. Last night, even though a few regulars were otherwise engaged, the blogger subgroup of the burlesque world expanded again with a group that, at various times, … There’s more

The best test you will ever take

GSAT: The Geek Social Aptitude Test My particular results are quite… accurate You Scored a 25 Out Of 50 Most of your friends are from the internet, and the only time you see them is when you drive six hours to a meetup or convention. You find it much easier to communicate with people on the internet rather than in face-to-face settings, and you never really feel comfortable in social situations. But you’re a god in some sphere, be it World of Warcraft, Second Life, some message board or a "scene." So, how geeky are the rest of you culchies?

Requiem for the Nearly Departed

I watched the Late Late Show last night. Well – you never know what strange or startling things you might miss? At the end of the first segment, which was so boring, I can’t even remember what it was about, Plank gave one of his witty little teasers - ‘I have something to tell you that will please a lot of people and disappoint some others.  Come back after the break.’ ‘Good God! He’s quitting the show,’ I shouted in amazement. ‘Don’t be daft. He probably has some tatty prize to give away, or something.’  Herself isn’t Plank’s biggest fan. When the show resumed after the break, he made his announcement – He is quitting the show. Of course, I was devastated. I shall really miss Plank. I shall miss those classic moments, such as the time he kicked the toy up the arse on the Toy Show and made … There’s more

So, Pat Kenny’s Gone…

Pat Kenny, knowing me, knowing you, AHAA!!! Some people will be delighted. Some will be quietly disappointed. But either way Pat Kenny has thrown in the towel. “All good things must come to an end”, said Pat. And with that, as announced on tonight’s show, his tenure of The Late Late Show comes to a close at the end of the current season.

meet the internet…

i dont care sooooo much for computers. i use it. i like it. but like anything in life. it is only ever a part of mine. when i was 6 i wanted to play for arsenal. now i dont buy football boots anymore. but thats a different story. i like football. if i miss a game it doesnt matter anymore. i dont fall out with people if they support liverpool… i probably should but i dont Now i’ve grown up i look older. I like computers. I know people who still like liverpool. My first computer was bbc. it cost 60 pounds. I wrote my own programmes. In hindsight it was brutal. But it made me smile. I eventually chucked it out and played football again. But life changes. People change. Priorities change. I find through all of that I haven’t really. What I do in life and how I … There’s more

Il Divo

Not these lads… These Lads… It focuses on the downfall of ear-y Giulio Andreotti, who apparently hooked up with the mafia sometime in the 70s, 80s and 90s. The movie is dark and red. Wholly engrossing, even if it’s a teensy bit confusing at times for someone (like me) who wasn’t totally familiar with the back story, it did however, encourage me to actually look up about it and I’ve learned a lot! The wordy bits at the start are especially nice and the camera work is A1. The tone is right, comical in places, and bloody at times. It moves really fast, but gets a tiny bit bogged down towards the end with the detail and how X knows Y and that Y met M and Q met P and they all met Andreotti. The guy playing him was deadly too, as are all the supporting cast. RPs says … There’s more

The Farrelly Brothers (Dumb and Dumber & There’s Something About Mary) are bringing The Three Stooges back to the big screen. Odd cast choices though - Sean Penn is set to play Larry, Benicio Del Toro is currently in talks to play Moe and Jim Carrey is going to put on weight to play Curly. Based on the classic children’s story, Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich) has released a trailer for his Where the Wild Things Are. I think this looks wonderful: Anthony Hopkins is back on biopic duty again. This time he’ll be getting his teeth into the role of Ernest Hemmingway in the story of the author’s life. The plot for the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street has an interesting spin on the original tale. As before, 18 years after being burned alive by a mob of angry parents, a pre-school caretaker named Freddy Krueger returns … There’s more
