Susan Boyle - The Hollywood Makeover

Just a little over two weeks ago she wowed us with her rendition of I’ve Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables, what a difference those two weeks have made in the life of Susan Boyle. She has now featured all over the world from The Today Show, to Larry King Live in America, and has famous followers such as Demi Moore. A video of Susan’s audition has become the most viewed YouTube clip of all time - with almost 200million hits. With the gateway to fame well and truely open for her. Cue the makeover. Gone is that fumpy 40 something that stepped out and wowed us with he amazing talent, and in her place is a new glammed up woman all on a budget of £100. Show officials are said to be ‘frantic’ about her new look as they wanted to preserve her uniqueness for the live shows. I was hoping … There’s more

Jesus and the Mormons

Thanks to 2fm and Rick O’Shea’s Beard, myself and The Jelly Monster went to see Outlander in Dundrum this morning. We thought is was going to be a nice morning out. Free movie, free popcorn and beverages. Alas all the free stuff in the world couldn’t make up for the utter shite we had to sit through for over 2 hours. Aside from it being overly long it was just bonkers and I find it hard to believe that it was greenlit for production by a sober member of Miramax. Behold, the review of Outlander by The Jelly Monster and Maxi Cane. ____________________________________________________ WARNING SPOILER ALERT (Not that it’ll matter) _______________________________________________ Ok, Jelly for those people who know nothing about it, who was in the film? Jesus. The real Jesus? No, Mel Gibson’s Jesus. Ah, Jim Caviezel. Yeah, that’s the dude. What’s the brief outline of the story? Jesus flies … There’s more

Review: The New Electric Ballroom, Town Hall Theatre, Galway

The first thing that strikes you about Druid’s New Electric Ballroom is the shockingly spare stage design. The lavish promises of the play’s title are dispelled immediately upon seeing the set. Immense grey walls wrap a raked floor and bare furniture. And with that misconception firmly in place, the gaudy colours of hope, regret and habit splash across the stage in Walsh’s absurdist tragedy. The setting, while indisputably Irish, is not any physical place, but that recognisable hinterland that borders Beckett and Ionesco, a place where ideas wear the flesh of people. 3 female siblings are trapped in an epic regurgitation of their memories of the New Electric Ballroom. For the youngest, her incarceration in these memories is vicarious- she is so familiar with the stories of a place she’s never been she prompts the elder sisters in their faltering and reluctant retellings of the dashed hopes of romance. It … There’s more

Tell me it’s Not True…

…say it’s just a story, something on the news. Wait for it…they are making Jade the Musical. I kid you not - see! Jade Goody’s family and friends have revealed plans for a musical based on her life. The stage show was announced at a party held to honour and remember the Big Brother star who lost her battle with cervical cancer last month. The show could begin production within the next few weeks and there will be a nationwide talent search for the girl who will play Jade. Surely there has to be a pecking order for these things, Ghandi-The Musical, Diana-The Musical, Mo Mowlam-The Musical, then and only then, maybe Jade, The Musical. I wonder what the will call it…Don’t Cry For Me East Anglia?

Movie News 24/04/09

Firstly, come join us next Thursday in Cineworld to see Jason Statham’s latest actioner, Crank 2: High Voltage. Sure, it’ll be a larf. Robert Rodriguez is revisiting the Grindhouse. He is making a movie out of the fake trailer Machete. Danny Trejo will reprise his role in what will undoubtedly be a gore fest. Rodriguez has also announced that he will be resurrecting the Predator franchise. He is going to make a prequel to the first Schwarzenegger movie called Predators. In Rodriguez’ hands, I’d be confident that we’ll get a great movie. But before all of that, Mr Rodriguez will be bringing out Neverackers, a futuristic thriller where a utopian society is disrupted by rebellion and a special team is formed to handle the crime wave. He’s a busy man. Denzel Washington is reteaming with Tony Scott again (and The Taking of Pelham 123 hasn’t even been released yet) for … There’s more

Darren’s Cinema Night: Crank 2

So, who’s up for it? Show up, switch of brain, enjoy Jason Statham and have a laugh and a pint afterwards. Sound good? Thursday 30th April is the first Culch.ie cinema night out. If it’s successful, we’ll arrange some more. For those of you who don’t know, Jason Statham is like a God. He has all the bravado and showmanship of Arnie, Stallone and JCVD from the 80′s and 90′s, but the fast paced action and technology of today. He is truly the last action hero.
