So, who’s up for it? Show up, switch of brain, enjoy Jason Statham and have a laugh and a pint afterwards. Sound good?
Thursday 30th April is the first Culch.ie cinema night out. If it’s successful, we’ll arrange some more.
For those of you who don’t know, Jason Statham is like a God. He has all the bravado and showmanship of Arnie, Stallone and JCVD from the 80′s and 90′s, but the fast paced action and technology of today. He is truly the last action hero.
Statham first came to the world’s attention in Guy Ritchie’s Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells and Snatch. After Mean Machine, he quickly became the go-to guy for heavy duty action films. With The Transporter he became a cult icon, creating the role of Frank Martin, a man whose job is to deliver packages without asking any questions. Complications arise when he breaks those rules. Transporter spawned two sequels.
Though Statham has gone more mainstream occasionally with The Italian Job and Cellular, it is only when he plays the hardened brute that he shines.
With Crank, he took the character of Frank Martin and did nothing other than change his name to Chev Chelios. Chelios is an assassin who learns his rival has injected him with a poison that will kill him if his heart rate drops. Cue a movie full of adrenalin pumping action scenes.
Crank 2: High Voltage has no discernible plot. It hangs on a loose premise that allow the director to throw Statham around the place and place him ever more ridiculous and death defying situations. It’s pure pulp fiction. It’s chaotic. It’s pointless. And it’s a hell of a lot of fun.
Next Thursday, April 30th, in Cineworld on Parnell Street, we’ll be meeting at 6 for a 6.30 showing. Then a pint or two afterwards to have a philosophical discussion the finer points of the film. Tickets are €10.40 (when did cinema tickets become so expensive?) and we will be meeting in the bar in Cineworld before the film. If you are interested in joining us, drop me a mail (darren at culch dot ie), or just show up and make yourself known. I’ll try find a red balloon to mark our group.
Sheila: But Darren, I haven’t seen the first movie. Will this spoil my enjoyment of Crank 2? Will I understand the complicated plot lines?
Darren: No Sheila, plot is irrelevant. Just come along and enjoy.

Can’t believe you changed my name to Sheila for the last bit….
I can’t believe you didn’t tell me it was a Jason Statham flick. It’s like one step up from a Vin Diesel movie.
The fact that I saw the first one and the name rang no bells is not a good indictation…
@Darragh I was using your weekend name: Sheila Blige.
@Niamh Just shut up and come along. It’ll rock.
Definitely in for this.
Me too, or three, or four.
I’ll be there.
Working!
Have fun!
Can’t but will be there in spirit…
This looks good…
is this the film that the tag line is…
‘HE WAS DEAD….BUT GOT BETTER’
???
@Ben That’s the one. Rockin’!
Seriously people go see this….possibly the most amazing/brainless/hilarious/psycho movie I’ve ever seen.
Also, these two things will happen after you see it…
1) You will be shouting ” CHICKEN AND BROCCOLLI” in really heavy cockney
2)All men will be terrified of shotguns for a whole new reason.
I’m sorry, but after Crank and Two Smoking Barrels, the lad’s a God.
Speaking of God… GOD I need to find a babysitter.
None of you are worthy.
I’ll just show up and make myself known.
Wait… this Thursday? Crap, now I have to choose between movie with Culchies and last lab gaming of the year with mountains of free pizza :/
@K8 Just leave the baby on the neighbour’s doorstep for the evening. It’ll be grand.
@Chris No contest. I’ll see you on Thursday.
But… free pizza
@Chris Free pizza’s for losers…
Having been subjected to the ad’s for this repeatedly in the states this week I actually kinda want to see it. Alas, I still can’t part with a tenner for it.
Let him loose in Leinster House
Feck it, i’ll head along.
Watched Crank (1) last night - really looking forward to this now.
@Voodoo Ah go on. Listen to Mike…
@Mike Good man. See you there.

Who pays for cinema tickets these days. Srsly like. Unlimited card all the way.
… having said that, don’t think I can make it tonight. Nooooooooo etc.
Well if he’s not going…
(actually, sorry, can’t!)
Me and DD are gonna have a night in, watch Bridges of Madison County.
Woo, score!
@Emordino Good choice. Eastwood is just dreamy in that picture. And Meryl Street has never been so dramatically dramatic.
