Darren’s Movie News 07/05/09

I tell you, if I had the time I would definitely do the Movie News Round Up every day. It builds up so quickly and some days are more hectic than others. Today, we have new movie news, pictures from upcoming shoots, a little gossip and a few trailers. In sad news, Dom DeLuise passed away. A Mel Brooks favourite in Silent Movie, Blazing Saddles and History of the World:Part 1, he died on Monday aged 75. It was reported a few weeks ago that Farrah Fawcett was hospitalised and was in critical condition. More recently, it seems she has been putting her affairs in order. Sad times for her, her husband Ryan O’Neill and their troubled son, Redmond O’Neill. James McAvoy, Elizabeth Banks, Laura Linney and Anna Friel will star in The Details, a black comedy about a couple who discover an infestation of raccoons in their back yard. … There’s more →

Winner of The Demon’s Lexicon

Comments are now closed on the Competition to win a pre release signed copy of Sarah Rees Brennan’s The Demon’s Lexicon. Sarah herself had the unenviable task of sifting through the 82 elaborate, complimentary, wonderful and crazy comments and she has chosen a winner. Congratulations to Chelsea: Dear Sarah, I (like so many others here) desperately want a copy of the demons lexicon! My pleading for an ARC isn’t only on my behalf, Rhiannon, Louisa, Amanda, Bec and I all will share it! So giving it to us makes five people happy, it would be like giving away five rather than 1! What is a great Irish song to sing?

The chatter in the comments about 13,500 people singing Hey Jude got me thinking. If we were to do something like that in Ireland - say Smithfield Plaza for example - what song could we sing? It should be something simple to sing. It should be Irish or at least written by an Irish songwriter. It shouldn’t have any affiliations with sporting, nationalist or religious undertones - so Fields of Athenry or anything Wolfe Tones is out, for example - and above all it should be fun. Something that people could sing unashamedly, out loud, with a feel good factor that shows that hey, the country might be in a bad state, but we’ll still come together on this day, at this time for a few minutes and sing out loud.
