Darren’s Movie News 08/05/09

Keanu ReevesHow many different versions of classic tales can there be? IMDB lists over 200 different films with the character Count Dracula in them (I’m sure there’s more) and Dr. Henry Jekyll has appeared in over 60 titles. What’s being added after each retelling? What’s been taken away? The entire mystery element of the Jekyll and Hyde story has long since been quashed so…

  • …I don’t see what Keanu Reeves new version of the Jekyll and Hyde tale, Jekyll, can add. James Nesbitt had an excellent mini-series on BBC two years ago with the same title. That definitely had a fresh slant on the story, so I guess Reeves’ movie could do the same. I’m dubious.
  • Vin Diesel is set to play and expert driver in a new movie. 3 Fast 3 Furious? Nope - it’s called The Wheelman. Pointless!
  • Director of 3 Saw movies and the incredible Repo: The Genetic Opera, Darren Lynn Bousmann is set to reboot another horror franchise, Mother’s Day. The original Mother’s Day revolved around three female friends who, while camping, are attacked by two brothers who murder and rape to impress their deranged mother. The remake sees the family return to the house where they grew up to massacre the new owners. It will be vicious and bloody, have no doubt.
  • I had almost given up hope on their ever being a sequel to the genius Sin City, but this week Robert Rodriguez confirmed that it will definitely go ahead and could start filming as early as next year. Woo!
  • Samuel L. Jackson is set to play the pirate negotiator, Andrew Mwangura, in a true story based on the life of the negotiator between pirates and the owners of vessels hijacked off the coast of Africa.

Get these motherfucking pirates off my motherfucking boat

  • The latest Terminator Salvation trailer has me very excited (despite the PG13):

Come with me if you want to live

No I know why Christian Bale was so angry on set. His acting is terrible.

  2. Lottie says:

The end of Jekyll (Nesbit’s show) promised a second series. I would love to see it. Highly reccomend that one.

Still can’t get excited about Terminator becuase of the rating. It makes baby Jesus cry!

And I really never want to go to Bousmann’s house for dinner.

Loved the Nesbitt Jekyll, would much prefer to see another series of that some Keanu tripe. Also hoping Terminatns turns out good. Dark Knight was pg13 wasn’t it?

  4. Lottie says:

Dark Knight was PG13? Even with the pencil bit? Okay - a little glimmer of hope then.

@Sean Valid point. But at the end of the day, that’s a Batman movie. It’s supposed to be accessible for younger audiences. A PG13 rating would have meant all of Arnie’s bloodied face hacking in the original Terminator would have been cut.

Terminator is not some super hero movie - it’s supposed to be the ultimate armageddon movie where mankind comes face to face with it’s own creation in a brutal, bloody and potentially unwinnable civil war. Dark themes - the struggle to carry on in the face of the inevitable demise of man; sex and reproduction in a time where children may not live to see their first birthday; war, terror and no Geneva convention - How can this be sufficiently portrayed with a PG13 rating?

Terminator Salvation will not be the groundbreaking movie that Terminator was, nor is it likely to push the barriers in the same way that T2 did. I expect to see a fun, action packed but ultimately empty movie. If it reaches the heights of The Dark Knight then wonderful, but I don’t see that happening.

Good point, I see where you’re coming from. This PG13 rating really annoys me sometimes…..all the studios are constantly trying to aim for it because they think it’ll make their movie earn more at the box office. This leads to movies which really should be 15′s and up to being cut and cut and cut until they lose what originally would have made them great movies, namely: Balls.

Also I know Salvation will in no way be as good as TDK. I agree it’ll be a great actioner, and hopefully the story will work. As long as they havn’t used that ending where they put John Connor’s mind in a Terminator. That would suck. Big Time.
