interview with a guitar maker…

I’m sitting down having a cup of coffee about a month ago banging my head off a desk, trying to get my head around some feature or other for a design… it’s nearing something like some sort of brain training exercise gone wrong]. G. Ryan is on. I think ‘flippit thats all I need…’ But the chap on the phone intrigues me…. and all I can think about is how on Gods earth did he end up doing that for a living, by 34 years of age. I picked up the phone and called Alastair. This is my interview with Alastair of Emerald Guitars…. i used to grow plants under my bed. you woke up one morning and thought ‘i wanna build a guitar…….. I have always been fascinated by guitars for as long as I can remember but never had the opportunity to learn to play until I was 18. … There’s more

Darren’s Movie News 19/05/09

I have a dream…works… Spielberg is working on a biopic of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. The only question - what took him so long? Claire Forlani, Dougray Scott and Rufus Sewell will star in the modern retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher. Poe’s classic story will even be shot in 3D I mentioned the Humpty Dumpty horror movie before, well the posters are out. Damn creepy stuff. And doesn’t it look freakishly similar to some of this guys work? It seems that Bradley Cooper is set to place Face in the A-Team movie (due for release in June 2010). I’m not liking the choice. Anyone else? The latest board game set to become a movie is Battleship. I assume it will be some high seas adventure tale. Strange though. Monopoly is already in the works too, so I ask, what board game from your … There’s more

We Got Time by Moray McLaren

Title: We Got Time Artist: Moray McLaren Label: unsigned/Lash Release: Out now I made the mistake of looking at the video before hearing the song on this one. The song starts off simply, then gets complicated, then fugue-like then sort of messy. There is simply too much going on here in a “wall of mostly harmonic noise” style as opposed to a “wall of sound”. This is my brain intellectuality trying to figure out why my heart changed its mind halfway through the song. Part of it is probably from a memory. School disco, not the adult in ill fitting uniforms that go on today, but an actually school disco. A midtempo song cleared the dancefloor. Too slow to dance to, and too fast to slow dance to. I assume that the likes of Coldplay don’t want to do floor-filling anthems, and its the case here. Its a gig or … There’s more

What Matters Most Is How Well You Walk Through The Fire

‘Dear Zachary’ is a staggering piece of work by filmmaker Kurt Kuenne. It was made after his best friend Dr. Andrew Bagby was murdered. Their friendship blossomed at the age of 7 and continued until the evening of Nov. 5th 2001. Andrew (28) was discovered with fatal gunshot wounds in a parking lot in western Pennsylvania. The prime suspect, his ex-girlfriend Dr. Shirley Turner, fled the United States to St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. It was here, shortly after the incident, that she announced that she was pregnant with Andrew’s child. She named the little boy Zachary. Kuenne started the documentary to honour Andrew. When he learned of Zachary he decided to make the film for the child; as it may be Zachary’s only chance to get to know his father. Taking nearly a decade to make, old footage has been woven with interviews of Andrew’s family and friends. It may … There’s more
