We Got Time by Moray McLaren

Title: We Got Time
Artist: Moray McLaren
Label: unsigned/Lash
Release: Out now

I made the mistake of looking at the video before hearing the song on this one.

The song starts off simply, then gets complicated, then fugue-like then sort of messy. There is simply too much going on here in a “wall of mostly harmonic noise” style as opposed to a “wall of sound”. This is my brain intellectuality trying to figure out why my heart changed its mind halfway through the song.

Part of it is probably from a memory. School disco, not the adult in ill fitting uniforms that go on today, but an actually school disco. A midtempo song cleared the dancefloor. Too slow to dance to, and too fast to slow dance to. I assume that the likes of Coldplay don’t want to do floor-filling anthems, and its the case here. Its a gig or a listen in the bedroom song. Its really needs a good sound system to do it justice, there is a lot going on here.

Soundwise, there is a little Robbie Williams mixed with late era Beatles or maybe Brian Wilson. With added cello.

For me its a no. I just can’t put my finger on why its a no.

The video on the other hand is bloody brilliant. Its old school, as in 1889 old. The entire video was done using praxinoscopes. Old technology rarely used today. After all an animation of 1.5 seconds is a little short today. Here, lots are being used.

And it comes with a making off video (yes folks I’m using Boing Boing as a source of music now).

About Will

Will likes to dance around the interfaces of technology, people and culture. Unfortunately that dance floor is freshly waxed. He usually remembers to write (and photograph) at WillKnott.ie

It’s a decent song, but the video is fantastic. Nice find.

Thanks… but seeing the video made me go wow… then I heard it… less wow.

Its like the Eurovision… the reason I was late to the live blogging was I was in transit. I heard the entries on the radio, but didn’t get to a screen and an internet connection until the voting.

Some of the songs from the first semi final sounded better without the performance, and some a lot worse.

The video here makes this song so much better than the song alone.
