Africa Day

Last year I just missed out on the Africa Day festivities, discovering it a day too late in some obscure magazine or flyer. This year luckily, Africa Day has their own brochure which I have in front of me and the lovely Joerg Steegmueller also put a notice in the Dublin Event Guide about it too so I had no excuse to miss out this year On Sunday coming, 24th May, from 12pm til 8pm, Africa Day are having a FREE outdoor event in Iveagh Gardens in Dublin 2. There is a huge variety of entertainment on offer here for kids as well as adults. “Visitors to ‘Africa Day @ Iveagh Gardens’ will be met by a lively and colourful scene: street performers, food sellers, dancers and hair braiders. Children and adults alike can take part in fun and games, ranging from sports skills to extreme bungee trampoline, giant jigsaw … There’s more

Those Scotties were hard work.

What happens when you walk into a cinema filled with peopel wearing sunglasses? It might be a sign that you’re going to see something different - or childish. Well Coraline is a bit of both. It’s a children’s film, really but it’s a kids film for grown ups. First of all, i have to get it out of the way - 12 euro per ticket for 3D films, and €1.50 supplement for unlimited customers. I’m outraged at that. Not enough that i’d tell people to stay away from Coraline. It’s a beautiful, colourful, funny film. It’s all about blue haired Coraline, who’s parents don’t have much time for her. They’ve just moved into the Pink palace apartments and are getting on with their gardening catalogue. Coraline starts to go exploring and finds a little door that leads into another world, where everything looks a little bit brighter, and tastier. Except … There’s more

Night At The Synechdoche…

Movie day and for once I’ve seen a couple! We’ve already covered Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York last week. All I’ll add is that I came out of it having seen something totally unlike anything I’ve ever seen, and that’s always a good thing for me. Yes, it’s extremely leftfield, far more so than Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine, but it’s excellently played by all concerned and asks a hundred different questions about life, love and the nature of everything that you’ll be debating the following day and rolling around in your head for the following week. Just suspend your disbelief at the premise, let it wash over you and revel in something truly, genuinely unique. You may come away wondering what it is you’ve just seen but how often can you say that about an American movie? Sublime -> ridiculous. Night At The Museum 2 is also worth … There’s more
