The Shawshank Redemption at the Gaiety Theatre

As the curtain lifted, I think I may have gasped at the hugely impressive stage, transformed into the cold, barred up Shawshank Prison. Though destined to be compared with Frank Darabont’s classic 1994 film, Owen O’Neill and Dave John’s interpretation of Stephen King’s short story immediately began ploughing its own furrows. The opening sounds of sirens, the introduction of Warden Stammas (Mitchell Mullen) and the biblical stripping of Andy Dufresne and the other ‘fresh meat’, are clearly geared towards rattling free of the preconceptions, aiming to present something new and different. Andy Dufresne is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover and sent to the notorious Shawshank Prison to serve two life sentences. Stripped of his life, family and freedom, Andy is forced to endure a spirit-crushing routine. But with his quiet strength and inner courage there is one thing that Andy never loses - and that is hope.

SweetTalk 35 @ The Sugar Club

This Thursday evening sees SweetTalk 35 hitting The Sugar Club with a feast of graphic design & illustration deliciousness. 3 amazingly talented designers/typographers/illustrators will be speaking about their work: Alex Trochut (work produced for Nike, Coca-Cola, the The Guardian, British Airways, Addidas) Ian Stevenson (MTV, E4, Paul Smith, Perrier) Gaetan Billault (Jo’Burger, Bodytonic, Snyth Eastwood, Mongrel magazine) I’ve been to a few SweetTalk evenings and always find them really inspiring, especially the Q&A session afterwards with the speakers. Interactive Dark Knight dance-off on YouTube

Who’d win in a dance off between the Dark Knight and the Joker? Time to find out… It’s an interactive breakdance competition in stop-motion where you get to match the dance moves. Great time waster, really interesting concept! This is from a French Canadian director called Patrick Boivin. Really talented guy, he has some amazing stuff up on his YouTube channel. (As spotted over on TheNextWeb.)

Up & Coming: The Deadly Nighshades

The Deadly Nighshades, a six piece punk-indie-alternative band from Bray, Co.Wicklow are the latest Irish delight to catch my fancy. Listening to their demo on the way home in rush hour traffic on Friday I found myself hitting reply so many times on “War” and “The Pilot’s Wife” I had made a forty minute journey having only listened to two songs. Both tracks are catchy and strong with great potential to be gracing the charts very soon. Gaining momentum and recognition through live gigging the band are pretty busy these days. They are supporting Casio Kids in the Academy tomorrow night and can be seen as support in Eamon Doran’s on 28th May 2009 and 5th June in Bewley’s Cafe (supported by The Cujo Family - very interesting blue grass rock band). They are also gigging in The Pint Bar on 13th June, Greystones Theatre on 3rd July and will … There’s more

Carlsberg Cat Laughs Comedy Festival - why it’s the best little comedy festival in the world

It’s happening this weekend. It’s in the best little city in the world. It’s something we’ve been anticipating greatly for the last year, following our great experience last year. It’s the Carlsberg Cat Laughs Festival and it’s going to be only mega. Or deadly, as they say down that way. There’s a wonderful sense of anticipation of the festival in the city and the festival office at the moment. The build up has been happening for months and the preparation will result in something extraordinary, something funny and something just wonderful. Rated as one of the five best comedy festivals in the world the Carlsberg Cat Laughs Comedy Festival has become an annual diary fixture for both comedy fans and comedians alike. The Festival has consistently showcased world-class comedians and captivated comedy fans for 15 years and it’s been brilliant for Kilkenny. With nearly 70 comedians, 86 shows including nine … There’s more

The Pogues At Newport…

I got this mailed to me today from someone pointing me to Philip Chevron needing some Pogues related help… Glad to BT (kind of like RT on Twitter….? Except not.) Just trying this one more time. If anybody has a copy to loan us - however rough sounding - of the infamous 1985 Pogues press conference at RTE, Dublin, please let me know. This was the event which was broadcast on BP Fallon’s radio show - the BP Fallon Orchestra - and was the Pogues’ introduction to the massed gents and ladies of the Irish media. This was the occasion the concertina player Noel Hill, in particular, called our music “unlovely” and “an abortion” and we were, in general, accused of the most base paddywhackery imaginable. Basically, had Yeats been there, he would almost certainly have thundered “you have disgraced yourselves again” at the assembled Irish journos and musos. Anyway, … There’s more

The Tudors, they need us!

Heaving bosoms, corsets and petticoats? Dressing up in costume? Sound good? Sounds like tremendous fun to me! The Tudors are having an open casting next Wednesday and Thursday 27th and 28th May in Liberty Hall, Eden Quay in Dublin for Season 4 of the show which will be filmed in Ardmore Studios and on location this summer. Open Castings will take place from 10am to 8pm. If you can’t make it to the open casting but want to be in with a shot at getting strapped into a groovy period costume, you can also send a photo and your contact details to [email protected] or post them via snail mail to: Extras Casting, Tudors Production Office, Ardmore Studios, Herbert Road, Bray, Co. Wicklow. I’ll see you there!

I Don’t Know by Lisa Hannigan

Title: I Don’t Know Artist: Lisa Hannigan Label: Hoop Release: June 29 I think Niall Harbison pointed out that the X-Factor the Irish have is charm. And “I Don’t Know” is charming. It feels like you are eavesdropping on someone’s thought process during a crush. You fancy them, but can’t quite verbalise it to them (If you walk with me, I will keep my head), but somehow it sounds more like Lisa trying to persuade herself rather than talking to the object of her affection. Then again I suspect that is someone passing that catches the eye. The problem with charm like this is that it eventually rubs off and reveals something irritating underneath. Fortunately for Lisa Hanningan, she doesn’t reach that point. Its a yes from me. Oddly this some has two videos. No idea why there are two completely different videos, with completely different vibes. The first one … There’s more
