Right, there’s a crowd of us Culchie’s headed down the country for the Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival over the next few days. Blogging may or may not be light, depending on both our access to the interwebs and our degree of inebriation. So, here’s a particularly well packed Movie News post to keep you going, for a wee while at least…
- Firstly, and rather thrillingly, DreamWorks have announced ten new animated projects. March 2010 sees the release of How to Train a Dragon with the voices of America Ferrera and Gerard Butler, followed by the fourth Shrek movie, Shrek Forever After in May. For Christmas 2010 they’ll have a satirical take on superhero movies with Robert Downey Jr., Ben Stiller and Tina Fey providing the voices in Oobermind. There will be sequels to Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda and a Shrek spin-off, Puss In Boots, which i’m excited about. Other original works include a modern fairytale, The Guardians, a caveman based cartoon called The Croods, a Terry Pratchett based film called The Truckers (seems to be similar to The Borrowers) and finally, The Super Secret Ghost Project, which I’m assuming is a working title.
- Remember Logan’s Run? No me neither - I’m very young and sprightly, you know. Well, it seems th e future of Logan’s Run is in the comics. Logan’s Run: The Last Days will reimagine the classic and add new storylines.
- Remember the 1985 movie Girls Just Wanna Have Fun with Helen Hunt and Sarah Jessica Parker? No, me neither - well, it’s getting a remake.
- Guess what else is being brought to the comic book pages - go on, guess… No? It’s Die Hard. Yip, John McClane is getting an origin story in Die Hard: Year One. I, for one, think this is a brilliant idea.
- Kevin Smith’s new movie, A Couple of Dicks, is picking up cast left, right and centre. Sean William Scott and Adam Brody are to join Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan (30 Rock and Saturday Night Live) in the comic crime caper.
- I mentioned the time travel movie Hot Tub Time Machine before as being an odd film that’s gaining some attention. John Cusack has been on board for a while now along with Crispin Glover and Cloverfield’s Lizzie Caplan, but now Chevy Chase has signed on too. Rumour has it that Chase is also looking at scripts for a return to Fletch. Exciting.
- The latest in the Final Destination franchise is dispensing with those pesky subtitles and just calling itself: The Final Destination. It’ll be the first of the films in 3D and I loved the ridiculous tongue-in-cheek OTT nature of the others - I look forward to cathing this one too. Check out the poster.
- Not strictly movie news - Freddie Prince Jr. (AKA Mr. Sarah Michelle Gellar) is joining the cast of 24 for the next season. Not happy, not happy at all.
- In Tom Cruise’s latest attempt to revive his flailing movie career, he is taking on Wichita, an action comedy with Cameron Diaz. Dubious much?
- Sweet mother of divine Jesus, what the hell is wrong with THEM. Hollywood exec should be shot for their latest remake idea - they are revisiting Alien to see if they can do better (monetarily) than Ridley Scott’s classic. Why???? The only glimmer of hope is that it might not be a remake, but an origin story of sorts. Agh!!! Commercial/music video director Carl Rinsch is attached to direct. Here’s some of his work:
- The now annual Saw movie will hit the screens again this Halloween with Saw VI. I love this franchise. Completely. Can’t wait. Anyone up for a horrorthon this year? Filming has jut wrapped and here’s some of the cast discussing it:
- Lastly, in made-for-TV Movie News, Al Pacino will star in a biopic about Dr Jack Kevorkian, the right-to-die doctor who made headlines around the world during his campaign to assist patients to commit suicide.
The trailers:
- A Perfect Getaway starring Steve Zahn, Timothy Olyphant and Milla Jovovich:
- Ever wondred want happened Jeff Daniels? No, me neither. Here’s his new movie, The Answer Man:
- And here’s Dennis Quaid’s Pandorum. This could be fantastic. It looks like a mixture of Alien, Sunshine and Event Horizon:
- If you’ve had enough by now, feel free to skip The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, starring Robin Wright Penn, Julianne Moore, Wynona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, Maria Bello, Alan Arkin, Monica Bellucci and Blake Lively:
I heartily encourage inebriated blogging…
