David Carradine, RIP

Very sad to hear the news today that 72 year old Kung Fu veteran has died. Carradine is best known (in recent years) for playing the titular character in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill - here is Bill’s graceful bow: Carradine was embraced as a 1970s poster-boy courtesy of the TV series Kung Fu. His performance as Kwai Chang Caine (aka Grasshopper), the mixed-race hero who trains as a Shaolin master, sparked a craze for martial arts and made him a legend. Here is The Grasshopper at work:

Sing with the Beatles

Would you like to sing and play Beatles songs along side Ringo and Paul? And John and George? Not in person, but virtually. From Harmonix, the Rock Band people comes The Beatles : Rock Band. It looks like its using the Rock Band 2 engine (similar to the Metallica version), and if the trailers (with footage) and the opening cinematic (both downloadable from the Beatles Rock Band site) looks great. Naturally it looks great; this game took at least two armies of lawyers (probably more) involved so it has to look good. And you get to play with /as the Beatles in the Cavern Club, in the Ed Sullivan Theater and even under the sea (in the Octopus’s Garden presumably) And because this is an official Beatles release / merchandise offering, there are the Beatles songs. Confirmed so far are I Saw Her Standing There I Want to Hold Your … There’s more

This is No Laughing Matter

Let me tell you about someone rather special. His name is Hans Teeuwen (pronounced toy-wen, I think) and he is a comedian (I use the term loosely). He is an off-the-wall act - he’s confrontational, challenging, unlike anything I’ve ever seen before, loud, neurotic and perhaps psychotic. He is all of these things and more. The problem is - he’s not particularly funny. On Saturday evening last, at the Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival, we went along to Adam and Jason’s Spotlight on…Hans Teeuwen. We weren’t entirely sure what to expect. The rumour was that Hans didn’t exist and that Adam Hills and Jason Byrne had made him up. Sadly, that was not the case. When going to see Hans, I think it important to bring with you your own stock pile of irony. His act, which includes referencing probably non-existent Dutch TV shows, sing-alongs that don’t work, criticising Disney’s overly … There’s more

Darren’s Movie News 04/06/09

I have missed loads over the last few days. Rick has already shown you the Toy Story 3 trailer and The Prisoner Promo. Well, I’ve plenty more: I mentioned before that Kevin Williamson was working on a new Scream Trilogy. Well, now it seems the Cox’s David and Courtney are on board. No word on Neve Campbell yet. Academy Award winning director of Slumdog Millionaire, Danny Boyle, may be returning to India to film another story in Mumbai, having acquired the film rights to Suketu Mehta’s 2004 book Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found. Do you remember Stretch Armstrong? A kind of rubber stretchy action man type toy. No, me neither. Apparently as part of the Hasbro Deal (responsible for the Monopoly and Battleship movies), Universal are making a film about him. Ok, it’s been rumoured before, but it seems that the Heathers sequel may finally happen. One of the … There’s more

3 For 2 Not Out…

Jarvis Cocker - Further Complications “I met her in the museum of paleontology and I make no bones about it…” What is there not to like about Jarvis Cocker? Seriously. I do think he’s a very acquired taste though, like brie, certain red wines and French cinema of the 1960s so maybe this won’t be for you. The songs are moody in places, beautifully wordy in others, witty quite a lot of the time and with nothing that will obviously appeal to radio unlike that 15 seconds of fame Pulp had with Disco 2000 and Common People. Excellent. Will definitely burn it to my iTouch. Daniel Merriweather - Love & War The latest in one of the longest lines of product in recorded music - white guys who try to sound black. Problem is, it’s just that - product. It’s very well produced by Mark Ronson but that fails to cover … There’s more
