I went to see Drag Me To Hell yesterday and it was surprisingly brilliant. A perfect blend of kitsch comedy horror and some genuine scares. I don’t know how Raimi has done it, but he’s create the best horror movie since The Ring, with enough comedy to match Scream. Fantastic.
In other horror news, it has been confirmed that plans are afoot to make two follow ups to this October’s Saw VI, giving us our annual dose of gore until 2011 at least. But there is also rumour that they may continue beyond that. I love them, so I say bring it on.
- Also on the horror front, The Real Story of the Exorcist is to be filmed. It’s not a sequel, prequel or remake, but it seems to be a docu-horror, similar to The Exorcism of Emily Rose. I’m not hopeful.
- Heroes’ Hiro, Masi Oka, has sold a movie pitch to DreamWorks called The Defenders. The gist is that a group of teens from across the globe are involved in an online role-playing games, but when a crisis occurs they have to unite in the real world to…ahem…save the day. It could be some great family fun.
- The astounding Doogie Howser Neil Patrick Harris, hot from doing an amazing job at the Tony Awards (see the vid below) has landed himself a couple of new movie roles. The Best And The Brightest sounds fairly dodgy - it’s a comedy about a couple who move to New York and become involved in the world of private kindergartens. His second is Beastly, a modern take on the Beauty and the Beast story. Fingers crossed.
- It’s been confirmed that the Shrek spin-off, Puss in Boots, will be an origin a story with a new set of supporting characters including Salma Hayak as Kitty, the love interest. Yay!
- In other Sam Raimi news, btw, it seems Kirsten Dunst is ow confimred for Spiderman 4. I’ve lost interest. Really.
- We all know that Kung Fu star David Carradine died last week, but another martial arts legend also passed away last Wednesday - Shih Kien, Bruce Lee’s co-star and archrival in Enter The Dragon.
The trailers -
- Offline is the story of a rogue scientist who enters the mind of a cybernetically enhanced super soldier with the intent of restoring his humanity through the potentially fatal process of mental reprogramming. Yip:
- On a similarly mindbending note, here’s the trailer for Bruce Willis’ new movie, Surrogates:
And lastly, Will sent me this kind-of-trailer. It’s a baby’s reaction to the Where the Wild Things Grow trailer from the film’s production blog:
Surrogates looks really poor - and I really have grown tired of Spiderman now. Such a shame becuase I really loved the first two.
it would seem that Uma Thurman finally finished the job she set out to do years ago
I wish Sony would give the Spider-Man rights back to Marvel, then they could give it a rest for a decade or so then make a really great movie. Never liked kirsten dunst in those movies anyway…
