Certainly not I.
The Hangover is not a particularly funny movie. It’s no American Pie. It’s no Porkies. It’s no Superbad. In fact it’s not really sure what it is. It doesn’t know whether to be a crude, juvenile buddy movie or a cleverer guy bonding, road movie. It tries to straddle both, and fails.
The Hangover is a Las Vegas-set comedy centred around a bachelor party gone wrong. Three groomsmen lose their about-to-be-wed buddy during their drunken misadventures, then must retrace their steps in order to find him.
The writing is often amateurish, and gives the cast and director very little to work with. It’s chockablock with scenarios that a 4 year old could’ve dreamt up. Lots of contrived situations and predictable stock characters.
And I suppose it doesn’t help when you cast actors who wouldn’t know a punchline if it jumped up and bit them. The casting is hardly inspired. That said the direction didn’t do anything for the rare occurance of comedic timing.
It contains some really dodgy ethnic depictions that border on the racist, a ridiculous scene involving tazers and schoolkids and a ridiculously contrived cameo from Mike Tyson who blatantly can’t deliver the simplest of lines, never mind act as himself.
It’s all a shame because in the hands of a decent scriptwriter and director team this could’ve been so much better. Instead The Hangover stumbles back and forward in time before lurching towards an ending that’s extremely predictable and unrewarding.
The Hangover will surely pack em in at your local multiplex but all in all it’s not worth a tenner of your hard earned.
Dude I thought it was funny. Made me laugh out loud more than once and yum yum man candy.
Also, was actually hungover myself while watching so added extra love.
Voodoo, funnily enough my ladyfriend enjoyed it too. Maybe it was the mancandy you speak of?!?
Just didn’t do it for me I’m afraid.
Definitely not the best written film but still was very funny at times - I enjoyed it!
Fair enough Brid, it did have the odd funny moment granted but just not enough of them for me. Plus it fell fairly flat halfway through and never really recovered.
At lease it didn’t get too sappy at the end.
I think you just wanted to write a contraversial review.
ha.
Yeah I wanna see the Mike Tyson bit always has me in bits laughing whenever its on the telly and that finer in it yumminess!
Ladies, this site is about popular culture not man candy dammit!
Voodoo, how very dare you! If I was going for controversy I would’ve slated Star Trek or something good. The Hangover ain’t worth it.
Jelly, ahem. No comment!
I was in two minds to see it and usually when that happens, I’ll wait for the DVD.
Probably for the best Maxi.
Just back from this. Really enjoyed it. Very funny throughout I thought. Apart from Mike Tyson, that was the only weak point.
Ronan, fair enough man. I did want to like it, I did want to laugh but it just wasn’t for me.
Yep. You called it perfectly. I thought it to be shite.
