The longest day of the year is almost upon us - shocking really! To celebrate the summer solstice, the Temple Bar Cultural Trust are having their annual Midsummer Festival in Meeting House Square this weekend.
Over the course of Saturday and Sunday, 20 and 21 June, Meeting House Square will be transformed into an urban meadow with a carpet of grass (wooo!) for people to get cosy on picnic blankets and be entertained for the day. Unusual place for a picnic, sounds like fun!
Some fire performers will mark the start of the Summer Solstice festivities with a breathtaking visual display of fire dancing and juggling at 4pm on Saturday evening, followed later at 10pm by an outdoor screening of Dead Poets Society.
On Sunday 11am til 5pm there will be the Midsummer Fair which will feature Temple Bar’s usual three outdoor markets – the Food Market, the Book Market and Designer Mart at Cow’s Lane. You can even sample spit roast hog, home made ice-cream from Burke’s Farm, Raclette Irish-Style or freshly baked Irish potatoes from ‘Dinner Jackets’ I’m told - I’m there, yum!
Sunday, being the actual longest day of the year, is the busiest day of the two.
We are promised that there’ll be a five-piece samba swinging outfit called ‘The Mad Hatters’ and musicians Declan Quinn, Fergal Chambers and Gerry Quinn from ‘The Irish House Party’. Children’s entertainment will include Punch & Judy, games, gags and dancing. A juggling jester and his friend Mr. Whizzy will be making an appearance too!
