Just when you thought Jesus couldn’t be any cooler

Let’s be honest - Mel Gibson didn’t do a great job of making Jesus cool in 2004′s Passion of the Christ played though he was by Jim Caveziel. Jesus has never really looked that great. He’s not a cool one like Krishna, a happy guy like Buddha or a mysterious one like Mohammed. Here’s a guy in need of pretty good PR. Not even Buddy Christ makes this prophet/deity/messiah/son of a carpenter look good. Not really. There’s long been that thought in Ireland that if Jesus looked a bit happier, a bit more mellow, a bit less “Look what you’ve done to me” and a bit more welcoming, the Irish probably wouldn’t have such a huge guilt complex. It’s propagated in schools, in church - everywhere. For someone with my background anyway, it’s an image that’s been hard to escape. I mean, when you think Jesus, what do you see? … There’s more

The Master Returns For Tennant’s Last Episodes Of Dr. Who?

It would certainly seem so. David Tennant here was snapped in between takes with Timothy Dalton in full Time Lord get-up, and John Simm looking…well not very Master-like but at least he’s there. Maybe Dalton appears in another young Doctor/Master flasback? Or maybe the Time Lords will finally be returning? Anyone got any theories? Other rumours knocking about suggest that Simm’s Master kills Tennant’s Doc, causing him to regenerate into Matt Smith’s Doc 11. Whatever happens hopefully the 10th Doctor’s final hour will be an entertaining and emotional one, as long as RTD holds it together. Source: io9

The Time Traveler’s Wife - Movie Trailer

Three weeks ago I finished reading The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. I really did wait too long to read this book - it’s spectacular. Today I came across the trailer for the upcoming movie starring the adorable Rachel McAdams and the chameleon like talents of Eric Bana and I’m totally unconvinced. It could very well be the manner that the trailer is cut but it just doesn’t seem to do the story justice. Your thoughts? **Warning** The trailer contains some pretty significant spoilers so if you haven’t indulged in the pleaure of the book yet, don’t watch it. Go out and get the book instead.

Nell Bryden - exclusive performance and interview

Nell Bryden sings Second Time Around for Culch.ie You know the way you meet someone and just know you’ll like them? That was my experience with Nell Bryden. She followed me on twitter, I checked her profile, invited her for an interview and next thing you know she’s on the couch, singing and having a great chat. I could have talked to her for longer! Nell’s story is fascinating. A hard working singer-songwriter who has an amazing voice, has financed her career to date through an extraordinary piece of luck and has a great personality to boot. We discussed her career, Irish music, travel, books, song writing, US politics - Nell has toured in Iraq , fashion and all sorts. Seriously, I had to cut the full interview by at least 15 minutes. It was like a TV show. I’ve rarely enjoyed talking to someone as much. Nell is playing … There’s more

Darren’s Movie News 18/06/09 The Trailers

And because there are so many new trailers out in the last week or so, I thought it best to give them a lovely wee post all to themselves: Scorsese’s Shutter Island is the story of two U.S. marshals who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the cost of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island’s fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane: In The Stepfather remake, a sociopath wants more than anything to have the perfect family but each time his new wife and stepchild don’t meet his requirements, he slaughters them and moves on, finds a new family and starts again: I’m not too interested in the Fame remake, but the impressive cast and fresh sound will undoubtedly guarantee a decent box office take:

Darren’s Movie News 18/06/09

Culch.ie has been a busy place this last week or so. In fact, yesterday was our busiest day so far, traffic wise. But that’s no excuse for me to be so far behind on the Movie News. And there’s been plenty going on: Firstly, check out 200 seconds of the best 100 lines from the movies: After the dismal reviews we gave Transformers 2 yesterday, Michael Bay has announced that he is to quit the robotic franchise in favour of something with less explosions. Perhaps he could give us his interpretation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing? No? Right, look, here, I loved the original set of Indiana Jones movies - loved them - and last year’s Crystal Skulls was so very very disappointing that I swore I’d never watch any of them again. However, I’ll admit that Shia LaBeoff’s slip that another Indiana Jones movie is nearing script stage … There’s more

Rock Flock Of Five - So Very Tired…

Jack Penate - Everything Is New This is fairly different from the upbeat chirpy borderline laddishness of his first one. It’s atmospheric, stylish and full of interesting beats that don’t forsake the catchy. Definitely not a cynically commercial attempt to cash in on last time but a broadening out into something wider and newer. Like it. Kasabian - West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum You do have to worry about any band that names an album that bizarrely. It starts off pretty decently but then rapidly descends into floopy sub-jazz riffs via pseudo Dick Dale surferama stuff and just plain loopy weirdness. After that I got bored and started to drift off to Twitter. Never a good sign. Shame, because I loved their first album. The Mars Volta - Octahedron One part prog-rock, one part sub-emo whininess bordering on Linkin Park. The Jonas Brothers - Lines, Vines And Trying Times Worse … There’s more
