The Carlsberg Comedy Carnival

Carlsberg is the new King of Comedy it seems having taken up the mitre of hosting the Kilkenny Cat Laughs festival at the end of May and now launching year two of the Comedy Carnival in the beautiful Iveagh Gardens in Dublin. The Carnival runs from 23rd until 26th July and, much like the Cat Laughs does for Kilkenny, the Comedy Carnival brings an air of lazy hazy summer to Dublin. The line-up includes the usuals like Des Bishop, Jason Byrne, Andrew Maxwell and PJ Gallagher but also has some very exciting “new-comers” and names maybe not as well known in Ireland. For instance, Bo Burnham who you may know from such Internet musical hits as Welcome to YouTube, Love Is… and My Whole Family. Darren’s Movie News 27/06/09

All the chatter about Michael Jackson has slightly overshadowed the death of another icon, Farrah Fawcett. I raise a glass to one of the real Charlie’s Angels. Well, I saw Terminator Salvation at long last. It was alright - entertaining, with a lot of action without going overboard. It wasn’t too long and didn’t have any stupid empty emotional moments. In short, it was what Transformers 2 should have been. Yes, there were plot holes (a lot of them) and yes, Christian Bale was fairly useless i it, but it was fun and very watchable (if only for the excellent Sam Worthington). So…on to movie news… Depp’s new movie with Christian Bale, Public Enemies directed by Michael Mann is set to be one of the biggest hits of the Summer. While promoting it, Depp gave details of his next project with Tim Burton (who is still busy with Alice - … There’s more

The Man In The Mirror 1959-2009

Last night, the news of Jacko’s demise spread at the speed of Twitter (11 mph faster than the speed of sound). 18 minutes after the confirmation of the death of The King of Pop I sat at the train station sans broadband connection and therefore totally cut off from the world. I watched in curious disbelief as a carriage full of strangers held a minutes silence and then broke into seemingly pre-prepared jokes and puns. The man was dead 18 minutes. It took Billy Connolly months before an ill-tasting pun was cast in Princess Di’s direction and he paid dearly for it. Doesn’t Michael Jackson even deserve a day or two? Less than 24 hours later and we are bombarded with crude jokes and emails about a man whose life was littered with controversy after controversy and who was reduced to practical hermitage to try find some semblance of peace. … There’s more
