Johnny Massacre- I wonder where he got it.

Julian Gough thought he saw Johnny Massacre in Berlin last night. Johnny was never one of the best buskers. He was the best. If you had to walk down Shop Street on a summer’s evening you’d want to give yourself an extra half an hour for your journey. Johnny would have brought the street to a standstill. I never caught up with him for that pint after he got back to Ireland from his travels. He was dead within a month of a quick chat in Easons. His funeral was one of the best day’s craic I ever had. The priest struggled to give a convincing eulogy as his inexperience with beds of nails showed. The congregation rippled with laughter and rippled with grief- we knew the enormous talent that had passed. His mother invited about a million of us to stay for dinner in the hotel afterwards. She wouldn’t … There’s more

Free screenings of Moulin Rouge and Adventureland in Meeting House Square

It’s part of the Temple Bar Circus Festival but I think something as fantastic as this - something I’ve been waiting for for ages now - deserves its very own post. Ladies and gentlemen, they’re showing Moulin Rouge on Friday July 10 and Adventureland on Saturday 11 in Meeting House Square, and they’re both free events! If you haven’t seen Moulin Rouge, this is an ideal opportunity. If you have, and liked it, you’ll want to go again. The Circus Festival organisers have arranged a spectacular spectacular evening from 9pm, which, if the weather holds, will be one of the experiences of the summer: Roll up, roll up for a fantastic night of Moulin Rouge inspired entertainment! This outdoor event will kick off with an aerial show by the amazing Barren Carrousel from Northern Ireland, followed by a screening of Baz Luhrman’s Oscar winning movie Moulin Rouge (2001), the vibrant, … There’s more

The Temple Bar Circus Festival, July 9 to 12

We’re barely over the Street Performance World Championships before we’re into another action-filled showcase for world class performers. The Temple Bar Circus Festival is coming to town soon! With comic trapeze and aerial circus feats, roving dancers, comedy acts, a circus cruise and street samba, there’s a whole lot going on from July 9 to 12. Events include a dragon walkabout, an art jam, a cannonball circus, a face painting workshop, a screening of Moulin Rouge in Meeting House Square (!), a Chinese Pole workshop, a Man in a box, a screening of Adventureland, something called Animatazz, an acrobatic workship, a militant traffic warden and a circus skills workshop - that’s a lot of things over four days! Best of all? It’s all free. Yes, that’s right, free. There’s a lot that you’ll want to see, either with children or friends or both! There’s the Loyal Club, an award-winning show … There’s more

FM104′s Just Havin’ A Laugh - The Review

Last night saw a host of well-known comedians take to the stage at Vicar Street for FM104′s Havin’ A Laugh event in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital. The impressive line-up of PJ Gallagher, Adam Hills, David O’Doherty, Karl Spain, Colin Murphy and more would have convinced anyone to buy a €28 ticket and the 3-hour show didn’t disappoint. Kicking off with an intro from The Phone Show’s Adrian Kennedy who welcomed surprise MC Dara O’Briain to the stage, the comics were playing to a mixed house of twentysomethings right up to fifty-and-sixtysomethings. The first set came from Eric Lalor, whose comedy is growing more confident every time I see him. He got a great reaction from the crowd and things were off to a good start. Maeve Higgins, the quirky girl of comedy, brought in the laughs but didn’t seem to go down as well as at Kilkenny’s Cat … There’s more

Barnacles are the work of vandals: Bill Bailey at Dublin’s Olympia

Comedians can be hit and miss, I find. Their live shows are rarely as good as their DVDs, their personalities in person rarely as enticing as they appear on TV and their shows, though funny are often so scripted that any deviation causes a disruption in the flow. The apparent stream of consciousness is carefully worded, timed and or orchestrated that even the apparent adlibbing is just a repeat of another show. If there’s anything I’ve learned from the shows at The Cat Laughs Festival, it’s that, especially seeing comedians repeat their gigs often word for word. I really hoped that wouldn’t be the same with Bill Bailey on Wednesday. A big fan of Bewilderness, Cosmic Jam and Part Troll, an appreciator of his role as Manny Bianco in the wonderful Black Books and a catch-it-when-I-could viewer of him on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Have I Got News For You … There’s more
