There’s an important charity fundraising event happening in Dublin next weekend. It’s in aid of Brainwave, the Irish Epilepsy Association and it’s called the Horse Show Hustle, which, funny enough, has pretty much nothing to do with horses. Continuing on the tradition of a ball after the Dublin Horse Show (where tickets were €150), this year Brainwave are keeping the title but bringing the fundraiser ticket price to a recession friendly €30 and holding it in Krystle, who have donated the venue for the evening. It’s not an event for the horsey set - in fact Brainwave think it’s just a great night out with some good music. On the line-up is David Kitt (with a five piece band), The Chapters, History of Harry and Colour in Countries (formerly All Star Charge), recent headliners at the Love Music, Hate Racism event. Today I met Peter Murphy from Brainwave who explains … There’s more

Funnyman David O’Doherty will record a live album on Bank Holiday Monday, August 3. The Rumble Strips are one of those bands that have been around for years, but have never quite made it big - though they are a little bit ska which isn’t to everyone’s taste. You might recognise one of their previous singles - “Girls and Boys in Love” and below is the music video for their current single “Not the Only Person” the vocals for which are just gorgeous and the video is just as lovely. It’s been far too long since I’ve seen a music video this good. I’m hoping their sound has matured away from the ska influences and will certainly be picking up their new album “Welcome to The Walk Alone” to find out. They do a great cover of Back to Black too.

I’m often quite taken by bands that sign to 4AD (The Breeders, The National, Camera Obscura, Bon Iver…) and the Big Pink are a fantastic addition to this UK based Indie label. They’re set to release their self produced debut album in September, and when discussing how Brief History of Love was named, Milo their synth player said “Every song is a love song to some degree, about every different aspect of love… The good, the bad, the boring, the exciting, the dreams, the nightmares, the whole thing and I guess that’s what encompasses the whole album, and we have a song called ‘A Brief History Of Love’ so it’s apt.” I’m hoping the album can even partially live up to that description. The current single “Dominos” is an insanely catchy elctro-rock tune and I’m hoping these guys will deviate from their massive European tour to play an intimate gig … There’s more
They were pushing a big bubble around Trinity College this morning. Well okay, not a bubble - a zorb - but it was all to do with the new exhibit at the Science Gallery, entitled “Bubble“, appropriately enough. The interactive exhibition - promising fizz, froth and foam - runs from tomorrow, July 31 culminating with a Foam Party as part of Culture Night on September 25th. You’ll find out more after the jump:
“To some he was a gangster, To others a hero, But to everyone, He was a legend.” Mesrine: Killer Instinct is the first of two films made about the life of notorious French criminal Jacques Mesrine. Unlike other sequels, you only need wait until 28 August to see part two The film follows the life of Jacques Mesrine from his early adult encounters in the French army in Algeria in 1959 through to the pinnacle of his criminal career in 1969 when he was declared Public Enemy Number One in Canada. Mesrine: Killer Instinct charts Mesrine’s rise from soldier to house burglar to bank robber to kidnapper to jail escapee - he escaped from four top security prisons in his time. We see the many sides to Mesrine, the family man who adores his beautiful Spanish wife Sofia and their three children, particularly his daughter, a humorous guy, a loyal … There’s more
Can someone explain how this thread has not been locked and the link removed? It seems as though the video was leaked from the police investigation… I assume there is a reason why it is still up, so can someone please point it out? There’s outrage on Boards.ie at the moment about how a You Tube video showing a man being hit by a train is allowed to stay on the Cool Vids & Pics & Links forum, traditionally a place where, well, the content is pretty much as it says on the title. Much of the ire is sparked by the content of the video itself: +1 to the removal of this link. I’m a fairly roley-poley, fun-loving chap at the best of times but this video still being allowed to be potentially watched by children is just ridiculous.
Kilkenny band SOUTH have very kindly invited two of Culch.ie’s readers plus a friend each to come to their gig on Friday night (tomorrow) as a guest of the band, upstairs in Whelans. I’ve already put up a series of posts this past week about the band and the making of their debut album ‘Insula‘ which is being launched on Friday. Ross Costigan documented the recording of the album on video, which he released in episodes One, Two and Three. You can check out some of the SOUTH songs on their MySpace page. If you’d like to go see the lads at the launch of their album, just let us know in comments and we’ll choose two lucky people tomorrow morning to go with a friend, tomorrow night, upstairs in Whelan’s of Wexford Street
*Sequels to include prequels, sequels, volumes, installments and parts.* Intro It’s almost guaranteed these days that if the Movie merchants in Hollywood happen upon a decent movie with even the slightest prospect of a franchise, that a sequel will be gracing the screens faster than you can say sell your soul to the devil for a handful of poppycock. For instance, how many more Saw movies can they bang out before the accept that they killed of the star in number 3? And who on middle earth thought Highlander needed a sequel? And Deuce Bigalow:European Gigolo? Why? However, now and then they get it right and follow up with an offering worthy of it’s forerunner and once or twice a sequel has been known to outshine the original. Lottie’s Top Five Sequels* 5. Superman II (1980) “And now… finally. Take my hand and swear eternal loyalty to Zod.” #5 had … There’s more
And we go straight into the second part of the over the top revenge saga that is the Kill Bill series. With the two films written and shot back to back they should have been one great film divided into two instead of a sequel/prequel made just to cash in. And they were great. With the characters introduced and the back story put to bed, we can get on with some gratuitous violence that is more justified and made more sense this time round. This is because we know what’s going on when people and places are referenced. There’s one thing I hate about watching movies with people who don’t pay attention. “Who’s that?” “Is that the guy from the thing?” “I don’t get what they’re talking about?” If this ever happens to you while you’re watching Kill Bill Vol 2 with some goober, slap them in the face with … There’s more
I was painting the flat recently, turning it from somewhere the 50s forgot into a place I could show my legions of adoring apostlettes around without the threat of a slap in the face and a sharp goodbye. I had to move my life into the shed. Books, clothes, CDs, DVDs, magazines, African sex gongs and novelty mugs all kept from harm’s way while I treated the walls to a lick of Crown brilliant white. Today I restored everything as was, and the DVDs came last. I didn’t count them but I reckon there to be between 200 and 250. 90% of it is stuff I’d watch again, I’m a man who views the good stuff ad nauseam, but I did come across some God-awful muck, the €3.99 shite you buy in HMV as some sort of sick retail therapy tool. Or Spar. Because it’s on display beside the ‘buy … There’s more
