World premiere of the new Budweiser ad

This is Budweiser Lyrics, the new ad due to premiere on Sky Digital this Saturday.

You can see the advertisement on a bigger screen here.

It’s part of their new All Together Now campaign which is inviting people to upload clips of themselves holding signs, like in the ad, to the lyrics of the song. The website for this will go live on Saturday to coincide with the launch.

The ad, written by Dave Henderson and Richard Denney, and shot by award winning director Chris Palmer, it was shot over 5 days from an actual train on the metro-rail as it tracked around the city of Chicago.

All in all, the film and crew were on the train for 50 hrs over a 5 day period in temperatures that were often below freezing.

All Together Now was written by Lennon & McCartney and originally recorded by the Beatles in 1967, released in 1969. Here’s the original video. There’s a Muppets version too!

The band behind the music track is The Hours, touring with U2 in August. The band chose to record the track as organically as possible to keep the tone in line with the film and was recorded in their hotel room using basic unsophisticated equipment and some of the percussion was even made in obscure ways like banging a fire extinguisher against a metal heater.

Some of the Culch.ie’s were at the blogger/twitterer/social media launch of the advertisement tonight, talking to the creative team via Skype and the marketing team about the campaign. It’s an interesting one for an alcohol brand - is it really what you expect from an alcohol brand or a Budweiser ad - those behind the Wasssup!, the talking frogs - Bud - and the classic Drayhorse Christmas ads - and will it help sell alcohol? Will it help get people talking?

One thing it did do was get us playing and replaying the video here on the big screen to see if we could spot all the lyrics in the advertisement. Some of them are very clever. I love the one for ‘i’.

It’s good and captures the imagination.

  2. Sinéad says:

Had a lovely evening at this event. Would love to see an Irish version though. My favourite part is the drummers, very cool.

  3. fustar says:

I could (perhaps) forgive them for their beer tasting like badger piss, but for inflicting the Waassssuppp craze on an already weary world their name shall forever live in infamy.

  4. Darren Byrne says:

It’s a very cleverly put together advert, but I’d have to agree with what a few people said last night - it’s more like an ad for a mobile phone operator - bringing people together - “connecting people”.

Would it make me want to drink Bud? Unlikely - but I do have an overwhelming urge to make a long distance phone call for a very competitive rate.

  5. Steph says:

Agreed with Darren. I would have expected Sony or a mobile company/operator. Beer company trying to be cutesy? Don’t get it. Nice ad but don’t think we’ll see sales going up.

  6. Kevin says:

I’d actually disagree with the general sentiment that the ad is brilliant but won’t drive sales. Every company (even Sony & Apple) have had horrid ads but fixed them, and thus driven sales. No reason why Bud can’t have some of that cake. Just look at Carlsberg. There’s NO reason to drink that stuff, but the ads drive people to ask for it at the bar!

  7. Annie says:

I really like it! I’ll never ask for a Bud ad the bar though. Unless there’s a free one going…..

I don’t think Budweiser could do anything to get me to drink their beer, but its a good enough add.

Would have been really mind blowing if it was all one shot…
