West Side Story - Remembered

Directors: Jerome Robbins Robert Wise Screenwriter: Ernest Lehman Book: Arthur Laurents Music and Lyrics: Leanard Bernstein Stephen Sondheim Cast: Lip syncing Natalie Wood (She’s a fraud) Lip syncing Richard Beymer (Ditto) Some American ballet dancing finger clicking fruity gang bangers Some Greek salsa/tango/mambo dancing feet stomping fruity immigrant gang bangers pretending to be Puerto Ricans. Story: The fruity American dancers don’t like it that their ‘hood is being taken over by the Greeks, probably because they dress better. The head of the fruity Americans gets a massive stiffy over the sister of the leader of the Greeks. Shits gonna hit the fan, but not without 7 years of jazz and two of ballet training it’s not. Think “Grand Theft Auto” as imagined through the eyes of that bald gay dude from Sex and the City series after falling asleep watching Romeo and Juliet. The Bite Size Oxegen Review

THE EYE-BROW RAISERS The surprisingly good new acts THE BRILLIANT THINGS/MESSIAH J & THE EXPERT Quality live acts, instantly attractive. PAOLO NUTINI Despite the disturbing vanity, he was very good live. Threw in ‘Ride On’ & Christy Moore nod. LITTLE BOOTS Overcame mike trouble to woo the crowd. The first newbie pop act to pull off a big outdoor stage KATY PERRY Who would’a thought? With props, comedy, hit songs & a Queen cover, she owned the O2 stage. No mean feat. The old-timers who still have it SQUEEZE Could’ve done with a later slot to get more of the older crowd but still good THE SPECIALS Nothing like a good ska band to get the crowd going. I don’t know if they realised that at least half the crowd were hoping that they’d start with Ghost town and repeat it for the set in imitation of the Fr … There’s more

On the QT - Part 4

If you’ve been following the progress so far, you’ll know that the next installment in the remembering of Quentin Tarantino’s movies is the utterly brilliant : Released in 1994 in a whirlwind of controversy that still hadn’t quite died down from “Reservoir Dogs”, Quentin’s second film as writer / director proved that not everyone suffers from the dreaded “second album” curse. The IMDB lists the films plot as: “The lives of two mob hit men, a boxer, a gangster’s wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.” Not much of a description when outlining the plot to one of the most influencial pieces of cinema to date. But as I’ll try to highlight along the way, some of QT’s best work comes from the stories, characters and dialogue. Plot is just there as a studio executive’s box that needs ticking. It’s both blamed … There’s more

Forget Oxegen, We Have Springsteen

I‘ll be honest, I didn’t really know who Springsteen was. I knew he was a singer and I knew some of his hits, but until last night, I did not know what an absolute phenomenon he is. For the past week, when I’ve mentioned to people that I’ll be going to see Bruce, I was met with excited and jealous faces. I was assured that he put on a great show, I was assured that I would not be disappointed, I was assured that I’d love him. But those are just words – the three hours of intense, earth pounding rock that clamoured from the stage at the RDS Arena had to be witnessed to truly understand. On Sunday night, 12th July 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band delivered one of the finest shows I’ve ever seen. I knew Glory Days, I knew Born to Run, I knew Dancing … There’s more
