On the QT - Part 7

And we go straight into the second part of the over the top revenge saga that is the Kill Bill series. With the two films written and shot back to back they should have been one great film divided into two instead of a sequel/prequel made just to cash in. And they were great. With the characters introduced and the back story put to bed, we can get on with some gratuitous violence that is more justified and made more sense this time round. This is because we know what’s going on when people and places are referenced. There’s one thing I hate about watching movies with people who don’t pay attention. “Who’s that?” “Is that the guy from the thing?” “I don’t get what they’re talking about?” If this ever happens to you while you’re watching Kill Bill Vol 2 with some goober, slap them in the face with … There’s more

DVD atrocities: Owning up

I was painting the flat recently, turning it from somewhere the 50s forgot into a place I could show my legions of adoring apostlettes around without the threat of a slap in the face and a sharp goodbye. I had to move my life into the shed. Books, clothes, CDs, DVDs, magazines, African sex gongs and novelty mugs all kept from harm’s way while I treated the walls to a lick of Crown brilliant white. Today I restored everything as was, and the DVDs came last. I didn’t count them but I reckon there to be between 200 and 250. 90% of it is stuff I’d watch again, I’m a man who views the good stuff ad nauseam, but I did come across some God-awful muck, the €3.99 shite you buy in HMV as some sort of sick retail therapy tool. Or Spar. Because it’s on display beside the ‘buy … There’s more

The first episode of The Byrne Ultimatum with Jason Byrne

I’ve been in TV audiences before. The Late Late Show, Questions and Answers, Tubridy, The Panel, Blackboard Jungle and even Jason Byrne‘s own show a few years ago (the Christmas episode where we sang “Chocolate Bin” to the tune of Christmas carols) , but I have rarely laughed as much out loud nor enjoyed a TV show recording as much as I did last night for the first episode of The Byrne Ultimatum. It was only during the Cat Laughs Comedy Festival this year that I realised just how funny Jason Byrne was and I really hoped he’s get his own show. I realise he’s had them - Anonymous and The Jason Byrne Show among others - but he has a wonderful way of looking at Irish society, culture, the things we used to do and how we used to do them.

Meet the Sumatran tiger cubs and their keeper at Dublin Zoo

I saw the new tiger cubs at Dublin Zoo today. Here’s a photo of them: This is their first day in public and the second time they’ve been with their father, Kepala. They’re Sumatran Tiger cubs, one male, one female and were born on May 29. There’s actually a lovely story in that - which I’ll let one of the zookeepers tell you later. The male cub weighed in at 1kg at birth with the female a mere .85kg As few as 400 Sumatran Tigers are in survival in the wild, so this addition to the critically endangered species is a testament to the successful breeding programme in place at Dublin Zoo. Here’s an interview with Anita, one of their keepers: The tiger’s mother, Sigra, took very naturally to them apparently, having had cubs who are now part of the global breeding programme. She prowled around the enclosure this morning … There’s more

Singers I love: Annie Lennox - I’d like her to sing at my funeral

I’m love Annie Lennox. Not only her voice but with the words, the commitments, the energy, the enthusiasm, the experiences, the causes, the drives and the smashing website she has. Saw a great mashup on YouTube today courtesy of DJ Earworm called Backwords/Forwards, combining many of her best hits: Oh Ms Lennon, how much I love your voice. Sing at my funeral? I cannot think of one other voice I’d like to soar above the rafters as my coffin is wheeled down the aisle.

Very Wrong Turn

Just a short post, as that’s all this film deserves. We sat down to watch Wrong Turn 2 on Monday evening. Granted, we knew it was going to be a daft gore fest, but we loved the first film, so decided to give it a try. The first film was clever, tense, perfectly gory and had decent performances that carried you through the movie. The second movie had…nothing. It was dreadful. After about 20 minutes we just switched it off. Now, I have sat through some amount of crap over the years and rarely have I switched off (or left the cinema). What films have you just given up on? Let’s get a definitive list of films that are so bad, we can’t even watch them to conclusion.
