Colonel Popcorn’s Minute Movie Mystery

Cheating in this will result in the baby Jesus crossing you off Santa’s nice list and making you populate an empty planet with Sonia from Eastenders and Fiz from Coronation Street. You may not use Google, Twitter, Facebook, the IMDB, Wikipedia, texting, emailing, phone calling, writing, and/or Jedi mind tricks or any other form of cheating. I’m watching and I know where you live. So does baby Jesus. 000OOO000 Guess the movie - Released in 1983 Is often thought of as a remake of an original 1932 feature of the same title, but it’s not. It has a body count of 42. Steven Speilberg visited the set and ended up directing a single shot. … There’s more

The cover of The Book of Tomorrow by Cecelia Ahern

I don’t know why but when I saw this over on Laura’s blog today, it immediately caught my eye. It’s the cover of Cecelia Ahern‘s next publication, The Book of Tomorrow, to be released on October 1. Tamara Goodwin has always lived in the here and now, never giving a second thought to tomorrow. Until a travelling library arrives in her tiny village, bringing with it a mysterious, large leather-bound book locked with a gold clasp and padlock. What she discovers within the pages takes her breath away and shakes her world to its core. Say what you like about the quality of writing, it’s an eye catching cover. The October choice for the Dublin Twitter Book (Twook) Club perhaps?

Dark Night of the Soul…

A bit late getting this post together but better late than never right? Dark Night of the Soul is a collaboration. But not like any you’ve seen or heard before. David Lynch is heavily involved so it really couldn’t be too strightforward. From its very inception, and through initial leaks, the whole project seemed shrouded in mystery and still, to a certain extent, is. According to NPR “it all started back in March, at the South by Southwest music festival and conference”. Strange posters were noticed around downtown Austin, Texas, that read “Dark Night of the Soul.” “They looked like movie posters and had David Lynch’s name on them, alongside names of some of our favorite artists, like Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse, Vic Chesnutt, Jason Lytle and more. We wondered if it was some sort of musical film”. Soon after their Austin trip, NPR Music received copies of the mysterious posters … There’s more

I Am He As You Are He As You Are Me And We Are All Together

Starting tomorrow, I’ll be running a Beatles Week. In the run up to the release of the new Beatles Remastered series on 09/09/09, I will be looking at what the Beatles mean to me (a devoted fan). I’ll also be reviewing Beatles movies, picking out my favourite Beatles tracks, taking a look at the new Beatles Rock Band game and examining the legacy of the band. If you have anything you’d like to add, if you want to tell your Beatles story, please let me know.

More Than Just a Murder Simulator

Video games are a rather confusing medium to introduce to people. Unlike film and more so books which have been around longer than most people who are alive today, video games are rather young in comparison and for the most part are only now deciding what they actually are. We live in a very interesting time to be a “Gamer”. Our medium is at a strange place where it’s breaking free to become a unique way to present a world, story or character. Finally cut-scenes and long blocks of story related text are being left behind in the films and books they belong in. Game developers realise there is so much more to do with their stories and ideas than simple forcing them into the face of a player. The initial thrill of long fancy looking cut-scenes has long past, these days most gamers are either too impatient and simple … There’s more

Edinburgh Fringe Reviews Week 3

Apologies for the delay in these reviews. Things at the traverse have been hectic as we gear up for the final day. That involves the 10 shows we have going, being disassembled and loaded out as well as maintaining a full day of shows going up on time. You’ll find me collapsed at 3am in Edinburgh sometime tomorrow! But for now I will get to tell you about David O’Doherty, Neil Delamere and my series of covers. O’Dotherty shows no complacency from having won comedy’s top prize last year with another amazing show. No difference in the quality of the comedy only the size of the room! On the night in question the musical whimsy is top notch as well as the more regular stand up. Tonight he does go off script to look at a copy of Donegal Democrat and Warlords of Pez as prompted by the audience. This … There’s more

festival of world cultures

thinking of going….? being honest I didn’t really know what to expect at first… I’d never been before…. all I can say is there is too much to do. Far too much. Go. I met with Joerg [yes *the* famous joerg ] and of course there were a few bands that I had on my list to see play live. I was at the main stage… it was jam packed! Then I went to see four lads play the buskers corner band stand on the east pier… they rocked the place! If you want a falaffel, some wind chimes, some moroccan tea or some seaweed sausages….. it’s all there. Last day tomorrow - go. do it. It’s a free gig. You can even bring a picnic. here’s my day……..

An apology to Mr Mike Scott

I first met Mr Mike Scott (he of The Waterboys) at the Abbey Theatre, at the launch of their 2009/10 season. The striking poster above caught my eye immediately and I turned to David, the Abbey’s Press Officer to express my surprise and delight at the inclusion in the programme when he gestured towards the man himself, deep in conversation with someone. I was awestruck. I try to control my fanboy-ness, it being most unbecoming for a “professional”, don’t ya know. All around actors, playwrights and media people swanned, greeting each other as equals where-as I’m looking at Mike Scott - MIKE SCOTT!! - and thinking “Wow, it’s you, in the same room as me. WOW!” See, I’m a big fan of Mike Scott’s lyrical writing and of the Waterboys music. It’s one of the first “Celtic” groups I remember listening to and understanding as a teenager. A cousin had … There’s more

Tumblelogs, blog a stream of consciousness

Hello there, my name is Dan and I’m a big fan of tumblelogging. In fact, I run five tumblelogs without any negative impact on my social life (honest). One of my tumblelogs even landed me a book deal, but I’ll tell you that story another time. I’m here today to give you an idea of what a tumblelog is and to get you started with some of my favourites. So what is a tumblelog? Pixelspread sums it up pretty nicely I think: A tumblelog is a stream of consciousness. A series of images, links, videos, quotes, and short blurbs that don’t necessarily share a common thread, but can collectively be pieced together to form a personality. If a conversations exists, it doesn’t exist on the tumblelog itself, but throughout the entire internet. If I expect to see feedback anywhere, it’s on someone else’s site. By far the most popular tumblelogging … There’s more

The Bionic Rats - benefit night

I’ve a blog. There’s a man who comments on it everyday. He goes by the name of Chris P Pancake. I’ve met this man numerous times and I consider him a good friend, so I’d like to help him in putting the word out about an event that he’s organising. Long story short it’s a benefit night in memory of Phil Smyth, a friend of Chris. It’s to help raise funds for the medical and hospital bills as well as funeral expenses. It’s not my business to post about the full details of events leading up to this, but I think you can appreciate that none of it was easy. Anyway, it is short notice, but the event is happening tonight in the Straw Hall in the Strawberry beds, Chapelizod in Dublin. Why so short notice? These are ordinary people organising an event themselves, no PR or fancy shtuff like … There’s more
