Spent a wonderful, if emotional, evening yesterday at the Screen At D’Olier Street at the first of their classic movie screenings, David Lean’s incredible Brief Encounter.
*sigh*
It’s been one of my favourite films ever for years now, just so beautifully told and played and universally true and not just because of my lifelong fixation with the work of Noel Coward either, but it is his finest moment…
They’re showing it one more time this Wednesday at 6.30pm.
The rest of the season looks like this:
Guys And Dolls
Monday August 10th - 8.30pm
Wednesday August 12th - 6.30pm
The Apartment
Monday August 17th - 8.30pm
Wednesday August 19th - 6.30pm
All About Eve
Monday August 24th - 8.30pm
Wednesday August 26th - 6.30pm
Fair play to the Screen people for running these - I’ve been saying for years that if there was a proper re-run house in Dublin I’d be there all the time and thus I shall. A bunch of us are arranging to go to each of them over the next 4 weeks.
Ah I love the Apartment. Shame I’m stuck in Amsterdam.
All of these flicks are worthy of being shown again in the theatre. Bravo Screen.
Cool, might very well see you there!
*Ahem* I did blog this two weeks ago you know!
I loved seeing Casablanca on the big screen and have been saying that there should be a regular classic movie screening of some sort. Or a classic movies festival or something, I’d love it!
Niamh, I’m genuinely sorry. Arse. In mitigation I was out of the country at the time
Lol, don’t worry about it, it did get kind of stuck onto the end of my Casablanca post. And if it gets the news out to some more people then all the better-more likelihood of them keeping the classics
I love the idea of this. I hope they keep it up.
EVERYONE should go see All About Eve. In fact, they should do a Bette Davis run - Now Voyager, The Little Foxes Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
Thinking about going to see Brief Encounter tonight, me, some popcorn and a box of man-sized tissues
Lottie, I’m pretty sure the IFI did a Bette Davis season relatively recently, did you go to it? I haven’t seen many of her movies but never made it to that either *must make more effort*
@Niamh - No, I didn’t. I wish I had heard about it. She’s amazing. I’ve only seen her in a few things but All About Eve and Now, Voyager are two of my favourite movies. You just can’t take your eyes off her.
It gives us a warm glowing feeling when we hear people are enjoying the Classics, we’ll keep them coming …
