(Grumpy people will either HATE this post, or be cheered up, but if happy clappy cheerful movie scenes ain’t your thing, run away now).
Ever have one of those days when everything is just brilliant?
I’m having one today, but of course no one really wants to hear that things are great with someone. We look for the dark side, the pointed “ah but what about how full of fail you are?” and the way to bring the person back to crushing reality.
Not so in the movies though. There’s a certain talent there to make an awesome day seem even better.
There’s some movies I can think of that do it really really well - so well they’re memorable, they look like fun to have been in and I’d love to give it a go. Sometimes it feels like I’m in one.
The term “great movie scenes” invoke a lot of factors but in this particular case I mean the big happy crowd scenes - the completely unrealistic, over the top, Disney effect, the marching bands, the dancing, the laughter, the “everyone’s in on it” factor, the “If only life was like this, wouldn’t it be great? Weird, but great” idea.
Take this dance scene from the upcoming 500 Days of Summer - this has been pretty much my day so far in my head:
Then there’s the others that no matter how many times I see, they still make me smile…
The epic opening sequence from Austin Power’s Goldmember (this came out when I worked in the cinema and I would go to each screen this was showing in just to see this scene)
“That’s how you know” from Enchanted
“Twist and Shout” from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
“Shake your Tailfeather” from the Blues Brothers
“You can’t stop the beat” from Hairspray
and then some of the others:
Singing in the Rain from, er, Singing in the Rain (Thanks Cyril for the reminder)
Phil’s Piano Solo from Groundhog Day
The piano scene from Big
The opera scene from La Víta é Bella (Life is Beautiful) (with a big nod to this Concentration Camp scene)
The dance scene from Billy Ellott
“I’m not the messiah” scene from Monty Python’s Life of Brian
“Joyful Joyful” from Sister Act 2
and of course The wedding scene from Love Actually
That’s a whole lot of scenes! Any ones in a similar vein that you can think of? What are the ones that make you smile and why?
Oldie but goody - Singing in the Rain - that has got to put a smile (even a small one) on your face. That or Marx Brothers movies…
Oh my God, can’t believe I missed Singing in the Rain! WOW!! *Goes to edit the post*
The end scenes in Labyrinth and Strictly Ballroom are both ludicrously happy
This is my favourite:

(The scene with the baby from Grosse Point Blank)
The last scene in Bugsy Malone…
Why does this never happen in real life?
