The Culchie Catch-Up

In recent weeks, Culch.ie has been on fire with some great posts from some excellent new writers and from our regular long time contributors. If you’ve been overwhelmed by the deluge, let me guide you through some recent pieces that may take your fancy.

Guest Posts

Though we have taken on some new writers, we’ve also been accepting guest submissions from some people. Lilbitz looks at some fun places to bring your kids around Dublin in Swings and Roundabouts, Keleher plays us a bit of Donal Lunny and Andy Irvine, while Hugo has a great post about the web today in What the Web Weally Is – The Good the Bad and the Ugly.

There’s two great posts on the movies from Niall and Ken. Niall takes a glance over what movies we can look forward to in the rest of 2009 in Coming to a Silver Screen Near You. Ken examines piracy and the entertainment industry in Is It Really Better Late Than Never? Ken’s is particularly worth reading for the comments after it too.

Movies

Venntertainment asks What New Horror Movies Are You Looking Forward To and previews some of the upcoming horrors after spending some time in London for the Frightfest. Niall, one of our new writers asks Anyone Fancy a Pint? and looks at the best bars on film and TV. He also weighs up the impact of Disney’s purchase of Marvel in Spidermouse, Spidermouse. LeCraic examines the changing ways we watch movies now. Is the cinema dying? Drop him a comment on Cinema - The End?

Radge reviews Adam Sandler’s new movie, Funny People, while Niamh reviews new war movie The Hurt Locker and The Colonel has been testing our movie knowledge with Colonel Popcorn’s Minute Movie Mysteries.

Darren’s Beatles Week

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, speckled among all the other posts this last week there’s been a distinctly Liverpudlian hue. In the run up to the release of the Bealtes Remastered, I’ve talked about finding the Beatles for the first time, I’ve picked out my favourite Beatles album and I’ve set a competition running to win the new Beatles Rockband game on the Wii. Keep an eye on Beatles Week for more.

Music

This morning I posted Robbie Williams new single. Worth checking out - let us know what you think of Bodies. While Rick returns with his Flock of Five, reviewing five new albums, Venntertainment listens to the BATS album Red in Tooth and Claw. In It’s Never Over ‘Til It’s Over NaRocRoc is griping about the fade outs in songs and I have to say I agree with him. He also has a look at the bizarre Dark Night of the Soul.

Ronan also has a great post running on his own site, Swear I’m Not Paul, covering the Top 15 Songs of the Naughties.

TV

Amanda has a truly brilliant post previewing all the new US TV shows on offer from CBS in Tellybets 2 – which new US TV shows will be hit or miss? It’s very much a ‘you heard it hear first’ post.

Gaming

As well as my Beatles Rockband post, there’s a great post from Stephen Colfer on Video Games which marks his debut on Culch.ie.

Books/Magazines

Ronan continues his Broken Spine weekly look at books and is in the middle of a heated debate in the comments on Broken Spine #12.

Sweary does something that’s been sorely lacking on Ireland’s pop culture website - she talks celebrity gossip. Check out Sweary’s Jaw and join the masses who read Heat magazine.

The one and only Maxi Cane has completed his superb coverage of the movies of Quentin Tarantino and is beginning a new series, talking about lads mags, in contrast to Sweary, in For The Articles.

Other Stuff

Darragh issues An Apology to Mr Scott in his article on the Waterboys’ Mike Scott. His fanboy interview is worth watching (and my apologies for the noise camera beeps in the background).

Tumblelog enthusiast Travors joins Culch.ie this week and guides us through his addiction to Tumblelogs, Blog A Stream of Consciousness.

Bngr doesn’t seem to have grasped the concept of pop culture, but she does have an interesting post on the 1911 Census.

Niamh tells us about the Silver Surfer Awards, a ceremony celebrating web use among older people.

Ekilko has been enjoying the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Have a look what he’s been up to here.

Oh, and go support Peter in the Gardeners Weekend for the Niall Mellon Township Trust.

Competitions

Woop! Culch.ie has a few competitions running at the mo. There’s The Beatles Rockband competition, which runs until next Friday. Culch.ie and Sol Beer have joined forces to offer you the chance to win two tickets and transport to the excellent Sol Sunshine Revolution, along with dinner for two in a top Mexican restaurant in Dublin.

We will also be running a competition starting this weekend in conjunction with the Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival. Keep reading Culch.ie to find out more.

As always, any comments, suggestions ideas and submissions are very welcome. Drop a comment below or email us:
