The Beatles at the Movies

The Beatles appeared in five motion pictures, most of which were well received. The pretty much unscripted TV movie Magical Mystery Tour was panned by critics and flopped, but the other four were successful. There have also been countless documentaries and a few films based on the life and work of the group. It’s fair to say that while the mythology of The Beatles began with the songs, it was film and TV that created Beatlemania. A Hard Day’s Night, directd by Richard Lester, who later went on to direct Superman II (after Richard Donner was fired) and Superman III, introduced the world to four charismatic young men from Liverpool. A loosely scripted comic farce, it focused on Beatlemania and the band’s hectic lifestyle. A Hard Day’s Night is a black and white mockumentary of the four members as they make their way to a London television programme. In 1965, … There’s more

The Hairy Bikers are cool

If there’s one thing I’m not too good at, it’s cooking. I think the last thing I made successfully was soup – when I put a bowl of my mammy’s best into the microwave and switched it on. Which means it’s even weirder that I love cookery programmes. I used to sky plus Jamie Oliver until too many cookery programmes made the box explode. I could watch cookery programmes all day long. Come Dine With Me, Rachel Allen, Trish’s Country Kitchen, The F Word, and I’ve gone as far as loving cookery magazine, yet here I am not actually cooking. Still it does give me plenty of time to watch them. Now, since we’re moving into Autumn, it’s the perfect time to do some cookery TV talk. And I’m going to start with the Hairy Bikers. These two lads are hefty, hairy bikers – who travel around England, and Northern … There’s more

Since @picnicinthecity followed me on Twitter I’ve been wondering what it’s all about - all they’ve really said so far is “Getting ready for a picnic in Merrion Square, Dublin on 11 September 09 - hope you can join us” So being the enterprising young fella I am, I went to find out more… Picnic in the City on Friday, September 11 from 12.30 to 2.30pm is brought to you by the Nature Valley brand. Did Ricky David Brent Gervais sing Mika’s We Are Golden before Mika did?

Remember Darren raving about this song? If like me you wondered why the song seems so familiar (and it does), it could be because you’ve heard it before… David Brent in The Office (episode 4, season 1) singing Freelove Freeway vs Mika’s We are Golden, via the detective work of Edward Stove: Here’s the original: Holy Moly thinks it’s got some Heaven is a Place on Earth by Belinda Carlisle and Jason Donovan’s ‘Too Many Broken Hearts‘ in there too. What do you reckon?

Get your tickets for the cash-in show of the year

Wasn’t all too surprised to see this coming to the Olympia. Saddened a little I guess but hey, they has got to make money somehow, don’t they? More cash-in than tribute, I think. €23 to see Man in The Mirror at the Olympia Theatre, Dublin in October, with “extra dates added due to demand”, apparently. Anyone interested in going? (I’m obviously not).

Competition: Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival

*** Competition Closed *** *** Winners are Catherine Egan and Richie Fitzgerald *** *** Thank you to everyone who entered *** There’s very little I can add to Darragh’s comprehensive piece on the Ulster Bank Theatre Festival except to say I am really looking forward to it. Each year the festival manages to up its game bringing fresh plays and shows from Ireland and abroad. With 26 shows from 12 countries in 16 venues all over Dublin, this year’s programme promises to be brilliant. Two shows that have grabbed my attention the most are Tales of Ballycumber in the Abbey Theatre and Three Sisters in the Gaiety. Tales of Ballycumber is the new play by twice Booker nominated Sebastian Barry and features Aaron Monaghan and Oscar-nominated actor, Stephen Rea, in the leading roles. Young Evans Stafford (Monaghan) calls to the home of a friend and strong-minded traditionalist, Nicholas Farquhar (Rea), … There’s more

Sing Hallelujah

Really like the idea of the BBC’s effort to get people singing. Heard about it last night on BBC Radio 3 during the interval to the Messiah. Sing Hallelujah is a nationwide effort in the UK to encourage people to : find their voices and discover the joy of singing. We want to get thousands of people singing Handel’s famous Hallelujah Chorus as part of a nationwide celebration of one of the most popular choral pieces in the world. Gay Byrne organised a “Messiah For All” concert back in 1992 in the Point Theatre in aid of Goal and Concern. As far as I remember, anyone who was familiar with the piece was invited to come along and sing. Those singing were organised into voice sections, while the remaining space was for the general audience. Audience and singers alike were invited to join in on the the Hallelujah Chorus. It … There’s more

Guest Post: Like - Lets get outta here, Scoob

Scooby Doo is very popular in our house. The various incarnations of the show are constantly rerun on Boomerang channel and my rather discerning four year old finds it laugh out loud funny. It also evokes enough nostalgia in the adults that we often find ourselves drawn in to the exploits of those meddling kids. For the last six months or so, a commercial for Scooby Doo Live has been running during the show. Usually my eldest son, ‘Isn’t really into that sort of thing.’ but for some reason the combination of Scooby, Shaggy and Pirate Ghosts grabbed his fancy and ran a mile with it. When I tried to explain that although it was indeed coming to Ireland it wasn’t coming to Dublin and it would mean a very long drive and probably a hotel to get to it, I was met not with a tantrum but a look … There’s more

A Dublin walk with Pat Liddy

Sunday last week I was lucky enough to be invited to take part in a walk around Dublin city centre with historian Pat Liddy. Pat is a well-known historian and face around Dublin and what he doesn’t know about Dublin, you could fit on the back of a postage stamp. The walk was to promote a new initiative by Dublin City BID - the Business Improvement District. The BID are a non-profit organisation who are trying to improve the city through removing graffiti, removing rubbish, adding on-street flower displays, new Christmas lights, providing professional Street Ambassadors among others and now they have developed a new initiative of wrapping 14 of those boring, old, grey traffic boxes with drawings of landmarks, interesting facts about Dublin and a map of where in the city you are and what interesting things there are nearby to visit. Though mostly aimed at tourists, the ‘interesting … There’s more
