Free on Friday - The Alchemyst by Michael Scott

What is it? A book by Irish author Michael Scott. What’s it about? Two teenagers who get dragged into a fantastic adventure involving magic, myth, monsters, legends and a book that has the power to destroy the human race if it gets into the wrong hands. Will I like it? If you like fantasy that takes ancient myth and spins it into a roller coasting page turner, you will most definitely like it. Although a children’s book, this is a thoroughly enjoyable thriller that adults will enjoy too. Where can I get it? Via the link on openculture to download the PDF version. What’s the catch? There’s none. This is Free on Friday. It’s Free (and since it’s from the publisher, totally legit). If there is a downside, it’s that when you finish the book you’ll be bursting to get the next one. It’s a trilogy you see. If anyone … There’s more

Beethoven’s music in graphics (Symphony no. 5, allegro, graphical score animation)

Ever listen to a piece of music and wonder what instrument is playing what and if you’re thinking of the right one? I’m absolutely fascinated by this video. It’s almost (almost) as good as seeing someone like the RTÉ Concert Orchestra perform it live, as you watch from above. It’s Beethoven’s 5th Symphony performed by the Royalty Free Classical Music Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Keith J. Salmon, visualised by colours per instrument played. Don’t get what I mean? Well here’s the instrument list: and here’s the video: This, and so many more videos are done by You Tuber smalin whose website is here. Fascinating work and something I’ll be spending quite a while watching.

Fearless about fear

I’m about to embark on a tour of sorts with compadre and fellow funster Andrew Stanley. I’ve never gone on tour before. Well I have gone on plenty of tours, school tours, city tours and detours. But not with my name on the poster as such. I toured with my Jedimaster Des Bishop around the country a couple of years back, but that was opening for him with no mention of me anywhere on the posters, tour biogs etc. People arrived to see Des and I was sent out to humour them before the man himself came on stage. No pressure there then as Des was the man they had paid to see. It didn’t matter if I died spectacularly or ripped it up. It was a great experience and it taught me a lot back then. This, however, is a different kettle of fish. Actually, while I’m at it, … There’s more

Slim is in - Facebook goes Diet

Social networking goliath Facebook today rolled out a pared down version of its universally recognised site, called Facebook Lite. The site is designed to help the company expand into developing countries where slower internet speeds are common. The company has also launched it in the U.S. as a quicker alternative to the main site for users that want very basic functionality without any apps.

How Did We Miss Everyone? My Electric Picnic Diary

I love music. I love seeing bands live. I love discovering new bands. I do not love mud and I do not love portaloos but I do love Wellies. I am conflicted. Despite and because of all of this the decision to go to Electric Picnic was an easy one. Enough good bands to keep my inner fan boy happy and enough good company to keep my inner grump at bay. Friday Friday began with a whimper as my sidekick (in truth I am hers) got trapped in work and we didn’t escape Dublin until almost 8 o’ clock. Finally with 28 cans of Dutch Gold in one hand, a bottle of gin and some toilet paper in the other we hit the road. While we didn’t manage to see any bands I did see some rather excellent episodes of Grand Designs and Come Dine With Me earlier in the … There’s more
