Two Sheets to the Wind: Top Five Directorial Debuts

It’s been a month since our last Two Sheets to the Wind. And in that time we’ve discussed doing the top five John Cusack films, the top five soundtracks, the top five Spielberg movies, the top five scariest movie moments and a good few others besides. However, having just seen Mark Webb’s first major feature film, (500) Days of Summer, a piece of beauty, and Duncan Jones’ first, the intelligent sci-fi flick Moon, and contender for film of 2009, District 9 by Neill Blomkamp, I began to look over other directorial debuts. Clearly some directors just have natural talent and were made to sit in the power chair. Some, like Chris Rock (Head of State) and Madonna (Filth and Wisdom) do not. The Dublin Bike Scheme - the second best thing to happen to the city recently?

I have to tell you - I love the idea of the new Dublin bike scheme, launched today. They’re now available on the streets of Dublin and I’ve already seen people around on them this morning. The connection to pop culture here? No, not tenuous. I could put in something like “You can get to your events faster” just to fill criteria, but I think this goes deeper. Suddenly we have introduced another factor to make our Capital City more modern, cosmopolitan and even that bit more colourful. A change in culture - “You don’t need to bus it or taxi it, just bike it” has been kicked off.
