niall mellon township trust gardeners weekend

and what a weekend it turned out to be…. It was amazing. To say I was blown away by peoples generosity is an understatement. Whether it was time, money or simply calling to wish only the very best - thank you all so much. You really did and will make such a difference. From my heart thank you! The *thank you* list here could only be endless so… if I have forgotten to mention you please hollar… you really do deserve it… The setting of the Garden Exhibition Centre was always a great start and the sun made a very welcome appearance. Saturday started really well highlighted with 2 garden lectures. One from myself and the second from nice guy and fellow garden designer Damien Keane. But Sunday left most mesmerised when The Riptide Movement played the second tier of the mountain side based centre. Kilquade certainly came to life … There’s more

Impossibly Beautiful

I spoke about Julie Feeney’s new album, pages, before and the newest single from the album is Impossibly Beautiful. It’s not the best track on the album and there is a number I would have put ahead of this as the next single such as the wonderful One More Time and Mr.Roving Eye Guy, but it is accompanied by a gorgeous video which features eighteen head dresses created by British artist Piers Atkinson. The video was shot by director Vittoria Colonna and is released on 2nd October. Julie is also embarking upon an Irish tour over the next month. Dates below:

Show how the impossible became possible and win a Macbook Pro

Coke Zero have a pretty nifty Facebook competition running at the moment. It’s all based around the theme of the impossible becoming possible. If you can think of an example that illustrates that theme, you are invited to upload the story, photograph or video clip to the Coke Zero Facebook page. It doesn’t have to be something from your own personal experiece. It could be a scene from a film, a photograph from a newspaper or maybe a passage from a book. Whatever it happens to be, share it on the Facebook page and you could soon become the proud owner of a shiny & sleek Macbook Pro. That’s the prize on offer for the winner of the competition which closes this Thursday, 17th September. Even if you don’t enter yourself, you can always vote for your friends entry which can’t do any harm when the judges come to decide … There’s more

UP

I got to attend the Irish premiere of UP last night. Disney’s new PIXAR movie, this is now firmly at no. 2 in my favourites. Writer/Director Pete Docter and producer Jonas Rivera were also in attendance to a full screen 17 of Cineworld. I’ll leave the well thought out reviews to those better able for those sort of things (Niall, looking at you here) but I just wanted to share my thoughts.

I Don’t Think He Can Handle It (woo)

How could I let the morning go by without sharing Kanye West’s outburst at the VMAs last night…no, really. The rapper hopped to the stage to share his thoughts after Taylor Swift pipped Beyoncé to the post with the Best Female Video award, something he was not too happy with at all. Now, the question remains as to whether they’ll show the full footage when the awards show airs this evening at 9pm on MTV.

THIS IS IT **There is no listing for a release date in Ireland on the website, I will try to find out if it will be released here at all and post it up here one way or the other** ***Tickets are now on sale for This Is It in UCI so please check with your local cinema***

Guest Post: Iarla Ó Lionáird

I have been a fan of Iarla Ó Lionáird singing since discovering the music of the Afro Celt Sound System. His vocals on ‘Nevermore’ and ‘Inion’ are favorites of mine. I could not find a video of these but did find the song ‘Éireann’ in which Iarla sings, I like that the clip shows the Irish or Gaielge with the English or Bearla. Here is Iarla on the stage singing ‘Nest of Stars’ from his “Invisible Fields” recording [TG4].

The Autoglass advertisement that had the Olympia in stitches

You’ve got to give it to Dave Moore and Dermot Whelan from Dublin’s 98. They do great stuff. This one, shown at Friday night’s Toll Troll Show at the Bulmers Comedy Festival had the crowd wanting more apparently. You can see why! They’ll be posting more of the videos over here in the next while.

Win yourself a soundtrack from (500) Days of Summer

If you’ve popped along to the movies lately, you might have caught one of the indie hits of the summer and one of the more original, funny and genuinely moving romantic comedies to hit the big screen for a long time. (500) Days of Summer stars the rather fantastic Joseph Gordon Levitt and Zooey Deschanel but better than that, it features a really hot soundtrack, with music from the likes of The Smiths, Doves, Regina Spektor and Simon & Garfunkel. If you fancy winning yourself a copy of the soundtrack, I’ve got four to give away over on my movie blog on the RTE 2fm website. Just toddle on over to http://2fm.rte.ie/theslate and you’ll find the post containing the question you have to answer and the email address to send your details to. Easy peasy!

Review: Red Lola at the Mill Street Studios, part of ABSOLUT Fringe

Ever watched a play that you’re not entirely sure what’s going on for most of it, where the unexpected keeps on happening, where you’re laughing but you shouldn’t and where you come out thinking “Wow, that was good”? Well, that was Red Lola for me. Asylum Theatre brought their show - a sold-out run at the Cork Midsummer Festival - to the Mill Street Studios for the past week and Saturday was the first chance we had to see it. I’m very glad we did. While the blurb is just that bit extreme: Red Lola just left grandma’s house and strayed right off the path. Red Lola’s not a little girl anymore. Red Lola lives in a land where pre-teenage girls wear Playboy tee-shirts, and every male is a potential predator, where premature sexuality and the fear of ‘stranger danger’ collide. Red Lola is a surreal and darkly comic journey … There’s more
