PPI Nomination for War of the Worlds

Funtastic news from friends of Culch.ie, the Devious Theatre Group, who have just been nominated for a PPI Radio Award for Best Drama. The Devious Theatre Company went on the air on October 30th 2008 with a new radio version of HG Well’s sci-fi classic The War Of The Worlds on KCLR 96FM. It was broadcast 70 years to the date of Orson Welles famous version on CBS on October 30th 1938. The new version was written and performed by The Devious Theatre Company and was entirely localised within the Kilkenny / Carlow region of South East Ireland. The production came together over the course of September last year, when they undertook to produce the entire thing from the ground up on their own, without any budget or financial support to get the show done. The cast featured the annoyingly talented Mr. Ken McGuire, John Morton, Kevin Mooney, David Thompson, … There’s more

Dylan Moran and a big greasy slice of never

I took my seat in Vicar Street for Dylan Moran’s show tonight in fairly pissed off form. Stood up for the fourth time on the bounce by one of the Xposé teletubbies - I can never remember their names - I was alone, balcony seat block F row A seat 12 thank you very much. If modern life is rubbish, it’s best chronicled by Dylan Moran. Dressed impressively in clothes directly identical to my own, he came on to the theme tune from The Wire. Always a good start. He shushed the audience (“I don’t need the validation”) and launched into a paean to the less moneyed times where he and nine of his mates would sit huddled over a single pint, launching angry tirades at people called ‘cunts’ who had things called ‘jobs,’ taking no little joy in the fact that, well, we’re back there again. Seeing as I’d … There’s more

Broken Spine #14

Save yourself hours or days reading the new Dan Brown, or else avoid it altogether by reading something far better with this week’s Broken Spine! Recommended Reading #14: Roberto Bolaño - 2666 If you were in a bookshop today, there was no way you could have missed the furore over the new Dan Brown tome The Lost Symbol. During the ten-fifteen minutes I spent browsing today, I definitely saw at least six perople purchase his latest novel. However, there are far better things you could be reading. Books that are a million times better than another Robert Langdon adventure (Yes, he’s back - so expect a film version to start filming shortly.) Perhaps the best novel I have read this year is a translation of the late Roberto Bolano’s 2666. 2666 was Bolano’s final novel, and was first published in his native Spanish in 2004, a year after his death. … There’s more

Guest Post: Hottie gets her crazy pass & Michael’s in the money!!

Suzy G has stuck her head in the door to give us her views on the Megan Fox/Michael Bay saga. What say you lot? - Darren After reading the open letter about Megan Fox written by some crew members of Transformers (a reaction to Megan’s comments that director Michael Bay rules the set in a Hitler like fashion) I was left a little shocked! In case you haven’t read it…“She’s as about ungracious a person as you can ever fathom. She shows little interest in the crew members around her. We work to make her look good in every way, but she’s absolutely never appreciative of anyone’s hard work. Never a thank you. All the crew members have stopped saying hi to Ms. Princess because she never says hello back.”

Patrick Swayze Tribute - Top 5 Movie Roles

Like Darren earlier I was saddened this morning to learn of the the passing of screen icon Patrick Swayze at age 57. Swayze was diagnosed in 2007 with aggressive pancreatic cancer which he defiantly fought for the past year and a half whilst continuing to film his TV show The Beast. Most people will probably know Swayze for his roles in the likes of ’80s classics Red Dawn, Dirty Dancing, Road House and 1990′s Ghost. By way of a tribute to his inherent and brilliant acting ability I’d like to share my Top 5 favourite Patrick Swayze Movie Roles. Jed - Red Dawn (1984)

Absolut Fringe Festival: The Legend of Zocorro review

Last night saw me venture to the intimate surrounds of Bewleys Café Theatre on Grafton Street to see ‘The Legend of Zocorro’. The official blurb told me this: “Quixotic Zocorro, storms into Ireland charged with a high dose of testosterone, to take on the giants of child minding, hospital administration, Ryanair and the kingdom of Kerry. “She was always a good girl with a strong back and sturdy hips”, says Zocorro’s mother. Warning: Strong language and adult content. Irish Finalist and Edinburgh Semi-Finalist in the 2007 “So You Think You’re Funny?” Channel 4 competition. Best Actress Nominee Dublin Fringe 2002.” So not much really!

Fans of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, here’s http://6of3.com

Eoin Colfer has just announced the launch of his new venture, http://6of3.com Colfer, the author of the fantastic Artemis Fowl series among many other books, was chosen to write a sequel to Hitchhiker’s Guide, and has written And Another Thing, released on October 12, 2009. From the rather brilliant website: You may not have noticed, but there’s something stirring in the Galaxy… Despite the efforts of the Vogons, and even those of a more-than-typically troubled teenager, the increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker’s Trilogy continues, much to the delight of its fans (and to the annoyance of the Vogons). And Another Thing, the 6th book in the Hitchhiker’s trilogy, or rather ‘double trilogy’ as it has now become, has been written by the brilliantly funny Eoin Colfer, international number-one bestselling author of the Artemis Fowl novels. Colfer is not unaccustomed to strange going-ons and far-fetched story-lines with his celebrated Artemis Fowl novels. … There’s more

Competition: Toyota’s IQ Test

Our very own Mr. Venntertainment was recently given a fancy schmancy Toyota IQ by…well, by Toyota. He’s testing it out over the next few months and is talking about it over on his own blog. Having seen this photograph of his lovely car, he decided to run a little competition, where you could win iTunes Vouchers just by being a little creative. I have a proposal for photographers and photoshoppers out there. For the next while, I’m going to be announcing a weekly photoshop competition, with iTunes vouchers up for grabs. I want you to to get clever with the Toyota iQ. Put it in the most unusual places, place it with the weirdest people or put the most unlikely things inside the car. Do what ever you can to get an effective and clever picture and be as creative as you like (within reason). This week’s prize is €50 … There’s more

Colonel Popcorn’s Minute Movie Mystery

Cheating in this will result in you having to watch Transformers 2 - Revenge of the Fallen. You may not use Google, Twitter, Facebook, the IMDB, Wikipedia, texting, emailing, phone calling, writing, and/or Jedi mind tricks or any other form of cheating. I’m watching and I know where you live. Trust me, Transformers 2 is muck, and that’s being nice about it. 000OOO000 Guess the movie - Released in 1982 Deborah Harry (Blondie) screen tested for a part Peter O’Toole had already signed on, but dropped out when he visited the set The movie wasn’t popular at the time, but the video game based on it was. It actually out grossed the movie Loads of Disney animators refused to work on the film thinking that they’d be fired in favour of computer animation Flashing glitches in the final edit of the film were made part of the movie by adding … There’s more
