TV Trailer: The Pacific

I know I usually only post about books, but this is too big not to be shared. It’s the new trailer for Steven Speilberg-Tom Hanks production The Pacific, which may as well be the follow-up to the awesome Band of Brothers. The budget was allegedly $100 million and is based on the memoirs of two former US marines about the war against Japan over the Pacific during World War II. It won’t be on TV until next year (Sky has the UK rights), but already I cannot wait…

Sebastian Barry talks about Tales of Ballycumber, coming to the Abbey Theatre

‘Here, now listen, I’ll tell you a tale…’ The next major play to hit the Abbey Stage, from Wednesday 30 September, is Sebastian Barry’s Tales of Ballycumber. (Darren has already given tickets away.) This play, a world premiere by the twice Booker-nominated author of The Secret Scripture (the Hughes & Hughes Irish Novel of the Year 2009 and winner of the 2008 Costa Book of the Year Award) is part of this year’s Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival. Featuring Aaron Monaghan, Derbhle Crotty, Dessie Gallagher and Stephen Rea and directed by David Leveaux, the play - “stirring the ghosts of a past fraught with sorry, isolation and emptiness” - is in previews 30 September and Thursday 1, Friday 2, Saturday 3, Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 October and then runs from the 7 to Saturday 7 November. Kings of Kong

‘I wanted the pretty girls to come up and say, “Hi, I see that you’re good at Centipede”‘ – Walter Day (Note: this piece has no substantial plot spoilers, but some of the links do.) Right after I saw The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters for the first time, I went googling. I needed to know more about the people in the film, and I knew that the story did not – could not – end with the final credits. But I’m already ahead of myself. Some of you have no doubt seen the film or heard of it; others probably haven’t, so I’ll summarise. King of Kong is a 2007 documentary about classic arcade game champions and challengers: competitive gamers who vie to be the best in the world at, say, Q*bert, Frogger or Pac-Man. As its name suggests, King of Kong focuses on Donkey Kong. Early … There’s more

Absolut Fringe Festival: Where Did It All Go Right?

The wonderfully glam Pantibar played host last night to a Fringe show from the Ponydance theatre group, ‘Where Did It All Go Right?’ Since it was all very last minute, I didn’t even get to find out what it was all about beforehand-sometimes it’s best that way though, no expectations usually make for an even better experience The official blurb (had I had time to read it) told me this: “Four people in a bar, trying to get out of it. Each one as familiar as they are strange. Nearly outrageous, mostly clever and always inventive, the ever-industrious ponydance, champions of comedy dance theatre and all things brilliantly average, serve up their latest and tastiest hearty lumpy mix of humour, honesty, careening and cavorting. A confection of moves and movement to a soundtrack of garish music and nervous tension. Four outstanding performers dance their way into hearts, minds and underwear. … There’s more

Rebel Pedal 2009

The third annual Rebel Pedal is Cork’s cycling parade and picnic (OK a party in the open) is on Saturday 19th of September. (Yes, the ninth year CEF has held a bicycle parade in the city, but the third Rebel Pedal. ) Its organised by Cork Environmental Forum in conjunction with ‘European Mobility Week‘ and coinciding with ‘Europe No Car Day’. This unique festival provides a safe environment for many who would be nervous of cycling around the city and shows what a pleasant experience it really is. Last year there were around 650 cyclists involved so you won’t be the only one out there. And its not just bikes, local groups supporting the parade include Cork Cycling Campaign who are organising feeder rides from various suburban points to the starting point of the parade, and Cork Community Bikes who have provided spectacular pedal powered creations for the parade. There … There’s more

Back to you Clive - Keith Floyd RIP

Yesterday witnessed the death of another great fore-bearer of modern popular culture in the guise of one Mr. Keith Floyd. While I don’t want to become the obituary guy I do deem his passing as a great loss. Floyd was the pioneer for the modern TV chef with his flamboyant presenting style, interplay with his crew and off-site, out of the kitchen, locations. An avid rugby fan and player in his youth Floyd turned his back on a career in the Army to pursue a career in cookery. He had limited success with his own restaurants until a fateful meeting with David Pritchard, a producer with BBC Plymouth with whom Floyd developed the style of cookery programme that would make him famous. Between 1985 and 2000 Floyd produced 19 series for the BBC and Channel 5 from every corner of the globe, and wrote more than 20 cookbooks to … There’s more

Sweary’s Jaw

Surreptitiously hiding in a tree outside Davina McCall’s gaff, so you don’t have to. Drunk-dialled recently? Surprised by an inclusion to lamebook.com? Mistaken a real guard for the stripping kind? Don’t worry, mortals, for it be the season for making a complete ass out of yourself in celebrity land as well, and you’re not the only one curled up in a ball of shame this week, howling “Let me die!” to any masochist left in your company. By now, the world and his donkey is aware of Kanye West’s bizarre interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the VMAs, but surely the world and his donkey already had some sort of notion that Mr. West is as bonkers as the average X-Factor wannabe lost, in a hall of mirrors? Check out the “new” King of Pop’s hair, for Jaysus’ sake. Any man who shaves the design of Saved By The … There’s more
