Album Review: Delorentos - You Can Make Sound

Release Date: 9th October 2009

The road to Delorentos second album “You Can Make Sound” hasn’t been smooth. After releasing their debut album In Love With Detail in 2007 the band appeared to falter. Be it for economical reasons or internal frictions in the band itself Delorentos announced their break-up back in February of this year. Their second album was to be their last, a best-of-luck and thanks very much to their fans if you like.

Then much to my delight in April they made a U-turn on the decision to disband. They were on the road to recovery. The new album, You Can Make Sound is on the shelves today and hopefully is far from their last.

In Love With Detail is one of my all time favourite albums, I know it by heart and as such any follow-up always had a lot to live up to. YCMS is certainly reminiscent of ILWD, the distinctive tones of Ronán & Kieran distinguishing the band as usual.

There’s no reason Delorentos shouldn’t be as big as Bell X1 or even Snow Patrol, they are just waiting for that break through song. Their songs while catchy and great to bump along to at a gig can, to the unfamiliar ear become a little samey. I think what they need is a really outstanding soft ballad. Soul-mate, the ninth track on YCMS aims for this but misses the mark effectively becoming the poorest song on the album. The stand out songs are the single S.E.C.R.E.T and the title track You Can Make Sound. They are defining of the band and the quality gig songs one has come to expect.

Where You Can Make Sound falls short of the debut album is on the lyrics front. In Love With Detail was rife with wonderfully conceived turns of phrase and quirks worthy of Paul Noonan where as the latest offering is a little bland by comparison. Don’t get me wrong, overall it’s a catchy, vibrant release that will have you pressing the repeat button on more than a few tracks.

The band will be playing a variety of gigs over the next while and it’s only when you see Delorentos live that you really get to appreciate them.

Like the two songs, will check them out on iTunes when I get back home from Dublin.

Couldn’t agree more with every point raised!

I love delorentos, but I can’t escape the notion that others would look on them as a guilty pleasure. On top of that, I’m not too sure why I like them as much as I do … they’re a lot more “lightweight” than most of the stuff I listen to and champion. I just like them. They’re really very likeable!

And you really should try to catch them live, just as you said.
