Never ones to rest on their laurels or to do one production at a time when they could be doing two, Devious Theatre have announced that they will do a special production as part of the Rockfall Festival. The Rockfall Festival is taking place in Kilkenny over the October Bank Holiday weekend and Devious Theatre have chosen to perform Shakespeare In Bits. They performed Shakespeare In Bits earlier this year at Rothe House as part of the Shakespeare In The House festival in June. Unfortunately I didn’t see it so I can’t tell you how great it probably was This is a new version of the production with some brand new sketches, scenes, cast members and musical interludes.
The show is described as ‘an irreverent sketch show of Shakespearean proportions’. The show is devised by and starring Stephen Colfer, John Doran and Eddie Murphy, three familiar faces from past Devious Theatre productions who last appeared in Stags and Hens back in July. The show consists of a variety of Shakespeare related sketches, set pieces and some very funny comedy. For any fans of the Bard it’ll have you in stitches. And for anyone who’s not a fan of Mr. Shakespeare, it’s a 50 minute comedic dissection of his work which is a million miles away from how it’s taught in schools.
I’ll admit to not having read much Shakespeare, but what I have read I have loved. Macbeth of course was my favourite and probably even more so after seeing it performed live on stage. The Merchant of Venice, Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado About Nothing are probably the only other ones I know well but I look forward to having my love of Shakespeare re-ignited by Devious Theatre.
Tickets are 8 euro and the show will be performed in Cleere’s Theatre, Kilkenny (056-7762573) Friday 23 October to Sunday 25 October. There will also be a matinee performance for 5 euro on Sunday 25th at 4pm. Proceeds raised from the show will go to the O’Neill Centre (Enable Ireland) based in Kilkenny.
Even more excitingly for those of us more Dublin-based, Devious Theatre will be taking the show on the road for one night only and will be staging a performance at the Ha’Penny Bridge in Dublin on Thursday November 5th.
I’ll be keeping a close eye on devioustheatre.com for more details of that one!
Did they perform at Electric Picnic one year by any chance? If so, they’re pretty dang good.
Awwww DANG I wish I could go… Will have to get a boat and sail underneath the ha’penny on 5th!
Oh i must put this in my diary!
Defo on for this.
