Culchie Catch-Up (10)

Burrrrrr it’s cold out lately but we’ve been keeping very busy to keep our temperatures up and to ward of the dreaded Piglet Flu. Apparently 30,000 people contracted Swine Flu this week. Something just squeals tales of self-diagnosis for a few free days in bed. Music Do a boy a favour and throw some questions at Maxi Cane. Rick’s Flock Five in which he reveals himself to be a closet Girls Aloud fan. True story! Darren is less than impressed with Robbie Williams’ new Album, Reality Killed The Radio Star. Random factoid, Robbie wanted to call the album Il Protagonisto (The Protagonist) but the title was rejected as the record label executives found it too pretentious. Sharon Shannon ‘Saints & Scoundrels’

I purchased the new recording Saints & Scoundrels from Sharon Shannon, a well known traditional Irish musician from co. Clare and after listening, have a review. I really like ‘Saints and Angels‘ which Mike Scott sings above, ’Cape Clear‘ which is a traditional air nicely played by Sharon, and ‘The Wild West Wagon Train‘ which is nice mix of the trad and non-trad music. The remaining tracks are a mix of different music styles, most are like the west of Ireland meets the wild west of the US, Shane MacGowan sings a song as well. Most of it is not my particular cup of tea .. but I suggest you have a listen to the tracks where you purchase and download your music, or check out her website http://www.sharonshannon.com/index.htmlwhere you can order ‘Saints & Scoundrels’.

NaNoWriMo - The First Update

For those of you who don’t know, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. Originally launched as a US only online endeavour where budding authors would attempt to write a 50,000 word novel over the course of one single month. It has proved incredibly succesful and soon people from all over the world started participating. Sticking with the original title, NaNoWriMo (InternaNoWriMo would’ve been too much of a mouthful) has over one hundred participants annually. This is a far cry from the 21 who attempted the first NaNoWriMo in San Francisco back in 1999. NaNoWriMo is open to all sorts of authors, and every genre imaginable. There is everything from sci-fi to historical fiction to crime thrillers to romance to steampunk vampiric Gossip Girl tributes. Well maybe not the last one, but I wouldn’t rule it out! If you want to sign up now, but feel that it’s too late, … There’s more

Satire? And Some Music

I really like the song, but I’m not sure about the video. Worth watching though. Bill Coleman is a Cork singer/songwriter. His new single, Welcome to the Breakdown, is all about getting laid off and spending the ill-gotten-gains recording and making music. Worse things he could be doing, I guess. The video features “Brian Cowen, man boobs, the invention of NAMA, a strangely Star Wars-y like Banker creature, a new Super Hero for the Times We Live In and builders arse (blink and you’ll miss it). Oh, and there’s ninjas. And a dust up – along the lines of the gunfight at the OK Corral, only the offensive weapons are hurleys and sliothars. Those poor ninjas didn’t stand a chance…“ While I like his new song, I was far more drawn to his other YouTube tracks. I particularly like I Want You To Know and The Pull of The Pint. … There’s more

The approaching weekend also brings more good tidings in its wake, with new cinematic morsels to tempt the taste-buds. So what does the line-up look like this week? Well we have a new comedy starring “The Most Handsome Man on the Planet”, a new motion-capture take on a Christmas classic, a demonic tale of teenage infatuation, and more besides.

Colonel Popcorn’s Minute Movie Mystery

No cheating etc, or I’ll set up a petition to get more Jennifer Lopez films made. I mean it. Guess the movie: - Released in 1993 Tori Amos was considered for the female lead Tom Hanks, Chevy Chase, John Travolta and Steve Martin were all considered for the lead male role. None of them got it. There are 38 days depicted in this film, either in full or part. Although the director revealed on the DVD commentary that the character could have gone through it for 10 years.
