Friday 13th: Time To Get Scared

Want Something Scary To Do Tonight? Time To Hit The Cinema As one of the scariest movies to hit cinemas in recent years, if you haven’t heard of Paranormal Activity, you’ve probably been living under a rock. Taking its cue from The Blair Witch Project and other such movies with a first-person viewpoint and handheld camera, Paranormal Activity isn’t quite that simple to describe. The film’s been knocking around since 2007, but has now been edited with new scenes for general cinematic release and was also the surprise film at this year’s Horrorthon in the IFI. It tells the story of Micah and Katie (Micah Sloat and Kate Featherston) and their attempts to record the strange…well, paranormal activity in their house. Strictly speaking, Paranormal Activity doesn’t open for another two weeks, but there are special preview screenings on tonight: Friday 13th hasn’t been this scary since that time we were … There’s more

Culchie Catch-Up (11)

Three very important things occurred to me this week while I prepared the catch-up. Firstly everyone and yes I mean YOU should go see Terminus, the new play in the Peacock Theatre in Dublin. Don’t make me come over there! Secondly, what a brilliant vital tool the new youth website Reachout.com is for young people. Yes, this is a big fat plug but for a really great cause. Check out the general section of this post for info. And lastly, how it’s almost time to deck the halls and erect the tree. Wipee! Music Cowboy x - Music to keep your eye on. Lady Totally Bonkers has her new music video, Bad Romance out this week. Views? Or perhaps your in the mood for something a little more traditional. Or nouveau traditional. Get yer shuffle on. What are the first ten songs on your I-pod if you hit the shuffle … There’s more

Lucy Opus and The Dirty 9s

I first saw The Dirty 9s a few weeks ago in Greystones Theatre. The band was playing support so I hadn’t planned on paying much attention. However, I didn’t have a choice. As soon as I heard the voice of lead singer, I was gripped. Their debut single Lucy Opus is released today, on Friday 13th, lucky for us. It’s taken from their debut album Stop Screaming, Start Dreaming, produced by Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers, Super Furry Animals). Named after the less than flattering nickname given to their local bus service, the 39 (“where even breathing upstairs on it can get you stoned!”), the Dublin five piece first came to the public’s attention when they won the €10,000 grand prize on Deis Roc, a music competition for unsigned bands which aired on TG4 . They used the money to record their debut album Stop Screaming, Start Dreaming which will … There’s more

Singin’ in the Rain @screencinema

Out this week, a new raucous comedy musical starring newcomers Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds. Last Monday night, a group of Culchies went along to see a preview of this new film Singin’ in the Rain in the relaunched Screen Cinema and we were all bowled over. In glorious technicolour, we were taken on a journey in this film that will surely win Oscars, if only for it’s star Gene Kelly. The saga begins in 1927, at a glamorous Hollywood premiere, as the star-struck fans push forward for a quick glance at two of their idols - Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly), a dashing leading man of the silent screen, and Linda Lamont (Jean Hagen), a self-absorbed but highly popular blonde bombshell. Don and his friend Cosmo Brown (Donald O’Connor) tolerate Linda but laugh at her endless efforts to woo Don as her husband. Just as Don finds himself taken with … There’s more

The Friday Feeling - Movies out this Week

It’s Friday the 13th, a day that many believe to be unlucky and filled with doom and gloom. Certainly today is filled with doom and gloom as it coincides with the release date for Roland Emmerich’s latest disaster porn movie, but I happen to believe that it is, in fact, quite lucky. Movies galore are entering screens near you and if you want to escape it all I recommend heading to your nearest cinema. So what is there to see?
