Fantasy Teen US Drama

If you had to pick your own fantasy cast of a teen US drama, who would make the short list?

Here’s what I’d go for:

The hot, rich and troubled leading lady

Serena van der Woodsen. Unlike your average melodramatic teen heroine, Serena most of the time ends up in trouble while trying to do good so she’s not as annoying as the standard drama queen rich girl. Apart from her bodily and wardrobe aesthetics, her hair is a product of the divine. I could watch it for hours.

Serena

The hot, not so rich and/or troubled leading man

This is a tough one. Dan Humphrey is too much of a prejudiced inverse snob, Lucas Scott was too much up his own arse and don’t even get me started on Ryan Atwood, so I’ve gone back in time to the downtown, boy next door, nice-guy Brandon Walsh.

Brandon

The Wing Man

The friend is often as popular with the laydees as the protagonist - Nathan Scott, Nathan Archibald, Dylan McKay - but there’s no doubt that the O.C.’s Seth Cohen wins hands down for his humility, excellent wit, underdog geeky status and secret unrequited love.

Seth

The Bitchy BFF

There’s been bitchier and more successful heroines, but Blair Waldorf is possibly my favourite all time US teen character. Her life is a constant juxtaposition of success and failure. She’s a product of conservate eltisism but she’s a social anachronism and is constantly in battle to hold onto her disappearing way of life.

The Romance

There’s been some quality romances over the years but without a doubt top prize goes to Chuck Bass and Blair Waldorf .

Blair Chuck

The MILFtastic Mother figure

It’s a toss-up between Kirsten Cohen and Lily van der Woodsen/Bass/Humphrey for me. Kirsten’s is the perfect mother figure but there’s a charm about Lily that the other’s don’t have I think.

Kirsten

Lily

The DILFtastic Father figure

No question and I imagine no dispute in this one. Sandy Cohen wins across the board. He’s the perfect husband, a good father, he’s moral and has a social conscience, he looks great, has a good job and he surfs. There’s really nothing Sandy can’t do.

Sandy

The Grown Up Bitch

She’s the bitchy golddigger with dramatic daughter issues but Julie Cooper Nicholl’s theatrics and humour make her my favourite.Julie Cooper

The One You Love to Hate

Dan Scott. Is it the evil schemings or the permatan? You decide.

Dan

The Perfect Setting

It goes without saying there has to be audacious wealth, but add to this cha-ching some history, aristocracy, tradition and fame and Gossip Girl’s Upper East Side New York is the winner for me.

The Don’t Fit Into a Stereo-type but Notable Mentions List

Peyton Sawyer was a great leading character, intellient, creative, artistic, and without the frustrating drama.

Peyton

Chuck Bass. He starts off a bit pervy with daddy issues but as with Henry VI, he takes on the mantle after his father’s passing and changes into a force of maturity, responsibility and romance.

Chuck

Now your turn.

I find Serena the least interesting of the whole GG cast. I mean, come on - stop whinning and just do something. I must agree on the hair point. How does she make it do that?

And Chuck is in the “mentions” part? Ppfft!

  2. Niall says:

No one from Dawson’s Creek? Pacey owns Seth ass as the sidekick. Plus you have Jen as the perfect doesn’t fit a role character. I can’t believe I’m talking about Dawson’s Creek.

  3. Bngr says:

Lottie - her job is to be the whiny rich kid but you must admit she’s way easier to listen to than Marissa or Brook or any of the other whiners. I still heart her. Apparently she wears extensions and I imagine the budget on her hair is the GSD of a small country.

*confession* *whispers* I never watched Dawsons Creek. Shame on me. I bow to your greater wisdom.

  4. Bngr says:

Lottie - re Chuck. You’re so right, Chuck is better than all of them, but Dan is the stereo. Torn now about changing it.

  5. Voodoolady says:

you watch Gossip Girl but never the creek?? FOR SHAME.

    I completely agree with Niall.

Pacey was the ultimate wing man

  6. Ronan says:

Now you’ve just got to work in a venue where this week’s upcoming alt-rock/indie band will play.

  7. Bngr says:

Voodoo I love Gossip Girl, way more than any of the others. I could catch up on the Creek but the thoughts of listening to the self-absorbing analysis of Mrs Tom Cruise, I couldn’t handle it.

Ronan - the club in the O.C. was probably the best one.

  8. Niall says:

You know there is another ongoing US teen drama focusing on the life of a guy who doesn’t fit in, his unrequited love for a neighbour girl and his quest to find his true identity. It’s now in it’s 10th season in fact.

I forget to mention that the kid has superpowers. ;)

  9. voodoo says:

I actually never watched either the OC or Gossip Girl. The creek did me in, especially the college years, what a pile of cack.

From the couple of episodes I have seen of GG it has about the same level of self absorbing analysis no?

Anyway, there was only one reason to watch DC.

    Joshua Jackson

    Scah-wing.

  10. Bngr says:

Niall - if its Smallville you’re talking about, I never took to that.

Voodoo - from the bits I caught of DC, Gossip Girl is nothing as bad as that. GG is just briliant. There are lots of annoying characters for sure but its still great.
