Not joyful abandonment, just looking abandoned.

(Cross-posted from Caricatures Ireland) I think this is very sad. Than you for visiting Macnas. We are currently taking time out to re-imagine and update our website and we will be back in the not too distant future! Please call again. I really hope that’s true, but when a company pulls all its contact details from its landing page it doesn’t bode well in my opinion.

Paranormal Activity - A review

Just come out of the cinema having seen Paranormal Activity. Now, despite the cinema starting the film 10 minutes before advertised and then bringing full house lights up a full 10 minutes before the end, I actually really enjoyed this film. If you haven’t heard the hype about this film or seen a trailer for it somewhere, you’ll have had to have been under a rock. That’s ok. When, not if, you go to see this film, bring said rock with you so that you can hide behind it. Right, well the story follows a young couple, Kate and Micah. Kate has a history of paranormal activity in her childhood and when some small unexplainable things start to occur in the night, Micah decides to set up a video camera and catch these events on tape.

Command and Conquer 4 - Joe Kucan aka “Kane” Interview

Joe Kucan tells culch.ie of the many changes in the up and coming Command and Conquer 4. I had a quick chance to play one of the new multiplayer modes which the series now focuses on. Gone are the days of base building with all building based units now being replaced by one mega mobile base unit called “The Crawler”. The Crawler can be constantly upgraded to build stronger and more powerful units throughout each match by sending troops out to collect tiberium crystals. It certainly makes a huge change to the classic Command and Conquer playstyle, within 3 minutes my GDI army was already engaged in a huge firefight with the NOD forces. Gameplay focuses around capturing map points and holding them. In fact should your crawler be destroyed a replacement is immediately sent in keeping you in the game but forcing you to begin upgrading from scratch. This … There’s more

IFI German Film Festival

The Irish Film Institute (IFI) are holding their annual German Film Festival from 3rd to 13th December this year. Click on the banner to access the IFI festival site. In summary: “Continuing a trend that has been much commented on, modern German cinema seems fascinated with exploring the country’s troubled past. Kaspar Heidelbach’s Berlin ’36 tells the extraordinary true story of Gretel Bergmann, who was destined for an Olympic gold medal before she was forced out of the German team for being a Jew. Max Färberböck’s A Woman in Berlin is based on the diary of the only woman to write about the taboo topic of the rape of German women by Red Army soldiers at the end of World War II. Two large-budget biographical features look at the lives of two very different figures from German history: Hilde, about the iconic actress-singer Hildegard Knef, and John Rabe, about … There’s more

Idir Mná presents Glengarry Glen Ross 23-28th November

Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning 1984 play by David Mamet, Glengarry Glen Ross is the story of the cutthroat competition between real estate agents at a Chicago firm, after they’ve been pitted against each other in a competition scheme by their management. An innovative production of this play is injecting the bitch into the cut-throat. Many years ago when theatre was in its infancy men played the roles of women, now it’s all grown up women are taking their roles back and then some. Yvonne Ussher the artistic director (who plays Joan Williamson) of Idir Mná which translates as “Amongst Women” clarified that ‘before people think it is a lesbian feminist thing - it’s not! And it is not in any way a male bashing machine. Idir Mná aims to address the imbalance in our profession on the lack of decent female roles in a way that doesn’t involve women sitting around complaining about … There’s more

Thank you for having your say in protecting the Arts in Ireland

We talked about it, we suggested it, some of you flashmobbed and more of you did it. You have helped the Arts in Ireland. Actors Cathy Belton and Fiona Bell take time out of appearing in Abbie Spallen’s play ‘STRANDLINE’, presented by Fishamble: The New Play Company at Project Arts Centre, to sign the NATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR THE ARTS online petition against further cuts to the arts in the 2010 Budget. Pic by: Ros Kavanagh This morning, the people behind the National Campaign for the Arts presented their petition, signed by over 10,000 people, to Minister for Arts, Martin Cullen TD. They urged the Minister to disclose the demands of the NCFA to the senior cabinet in the run up to Budget 2010. That could help a lot of people working in the Arts and ensure that some great literary, dramatic, musical and film work continues to be promoted in … There’s more

Twelve Days in May

A Play by Frank Allen Liberty Hall, Dublin 1 at 8pm nightly Tickets 20euro, runs til November 28th Only 3 days left of Twelve Days in May It was recommended to me to go see this before it closed. So I checked it out last night. Going on a day when public sector strikes were happening all over the country seemed most appropriate because this play was about James Connolly during, you guessed it, 12 days in may of 1916.

He wasn’t in it, but if he was in it, he might have been in it like this…

If you’re a Star Trek fan and followed the brouhaha (what a great word) over William Shatner’s potential cameo in JJ Abrams Star Trek, you’ll recall The Shat’s video where he spoke about not being involved. At the time, Abrams and writers, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, spoke about how they tried to find a way to fit Shatner’s Kirk into the script, but in the end felt it wouldn’t work. However, according to TrekMovie.com, they did write a scene for Shatner, though the actor never got to read it. The ‘scene’ is actually two alternative scenes for the end of the film - the moment between Nimoy’s Spock and Quinto’s Spock in the hangar, and the award ceremony with Kirk and Pike. There’s no guarantee Shatner would have done it, even if he had seen the script, but much as I loved Abrams Star Trek (one of the best films … There’s more

Sweary’s Jaw

Surreptitiously stalking Beyonce through Brown Thomas’ knickers department, so you don’t have to. With the country under water, the public sector workers out sulking in the rain, and Thierry Henry not yet imprisoned, us lot could do with a larf. But what to do? Comedy Clubs serve expensive drinks, and Twink-baiting is far too dangerous. If only there was a ready source of shits and giggles, gratis, of course, as free and easy as Lindsay Lo… wait! That’s it! Celebrities! Collectively, they provide enough sniggers to keep Mr. T. going for a calendar year, they do. Enough with the faffing about! Let this week’s circus begin! While “normal” teens (ewwww) are frothing at their yellow, crooked gnashers over the Twilight Saga now that New Moon has slithered into the cinema, one could deduce that it’s absolutely refreshing that Ms. Miley Cyrus, a.k.a. Hannah Montana, a.k.a. Billie Ray JR, a.k.a. the … There’s more
