Master of the Flying Guillotine

Jimmy Wang Yu’s outrageous martial arts film from 1975 is something of a cult classic. I re-watched it recently and can happily report that it’s as over the top and crazily entertaining as ever. This fight scene — between the one-armed boxer (Wang Yu) and a yoga master with an unexpected special power — is typical: The Onion AV Club wrote that Master of the Flying Guillotine “needs to be seen to be believed, and even then defies belief”. They’re right.

Culchie Catch-Up (13)

You know, it comes to Tuesday every week and I think ‘I must start the Catch-up’ but inevitably I put it on the long finger until Friday morning comes around when I scramble, bleary eyes and uncaffeinated to put the post together. I’ll be better next week, pinky swear! FYI we will be Live Blogging the Late Late Toy Show from 9.30pm. With that jar of sweeties under his desk we’re guessing Tubridy will be more at ease with the kiddies than Pat Kenny ever was. Movies The latest promo posters for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland - I am remaining excited but reserved on this one. It’s a musical Top 5 this week. Who else is re-he-healy looking forward to Nine? I will be exercising my Couch Potato muscles tonight maybe with Eddie Izzard. Personally, I wouldn’t have minded a little Shatner in the new Star Trek movie. Here’s … There’s more

It’s The Emergency CD of the year, just in time for Christmas.

EDIT: Feck, I really should read this site from time to time. If I did, I’d have seen that Anto has already blogged about this CD this week. Sorry! It’s over on mine so I thought I’d share the video of Brain Cowen being kidnapped that has landed in my inbox with you as well. Shocking what some people will do to push their new CD - Use Democracy Sensibly - featuring two topical, politically satirical but above all hilarious tracks of them doing funny stuff. Erm, yes. Anyhow, in The Emergency’s Christmas Carol, we’re treated to After collapsing into a customary deep sleep in Leinster House, acting Taoiseach Brian Cowen receives a chilling visitation from the ghost of Eamon deValera who sends three spirits; The Ghost of Governments Past, the Ghost of Governments Present and the Ghost of Governments Yet To Come, to visit and make him repent for … There’s more

Competition: Win Two PS3 Games

*** Competition Closed *** Ok, so it’s fair to say that I’m no big Gamer. I don’t have a PS3, I don’t have an X-Box and I can only just handle MarioKart on the Wii. So, when it comes to sports games, I’m at a loss. I wish I could say something about NHL 10 other than “It’s a hockey game” but I’ve never played it. But according to those in the know, it’s damn fine. In any case we’ve got 3 copies of the PS3 version to give away to the Culchie masses. NHL 10 features more than 200 gameplay refinements that replicate the skill and finesse of hockey and deliver the most responsive and authentic action ever for the series. Players can one-time loose pucks, score from their knees, knock pucks out of the air and lift a leg to fake a shot on goal. A new 360° … There’s more

Anyone interested in a Toy Show Live Blog?

Hey all, I’m planning a quiet night in this evening and I’m thinking of sticking on RTE One at 9.30pm for Tubber’s first Toy Show. If I run a liveblog, will anyone be around to help slag off his choice of jumper, laugh when he breaks a toy and cheer when he says “There’s one for everybody in the audience“? If there’s any interest, I’ll kick off about 9.15pm. Any thoughts on good drinking games during the show? The Friday Feeling – Movies out this Week

Another week has come and gone and we’re right back round to Friday. Today is an exceptionally good Friday as the Late Late Toy Show is on RTÉ 1 tonight, and for the first time in years I actually get to watch it. But I digress, today is meant to be all about the new movies out to help you wile away the cold winter days. We’ve a full slate this week with new thrillers, a Christmas comedy and record breaking supernatural horror that will guarantee that you’ll lock the bedroom door.

Could You Buy Them A Pint?

I found myself in Ballinasloe last night and couldn’t get over the state of the town since the floods of this week. Football pitches are now rivers, roads are closed, people have been washed out of their homes. I was so grateful for my warm, dry home to come back to. The floods in the west, midlands and south of the country have wreaked turmoil on people’s lives this week, leaving many washed out of their homes in the lead up to Christmas. Today FM and The Ray Foley Show have launched an appeal to the public to give what they can or in the case that you can’t give, do what you can to help these families. It doesn’t have to be money, we’re all strapped these days, the SVP are calling for practical contributions. If you have time to give or a skill that could be useful in … There’s more
