The Hazel Revington Cross Effect…

I know a lot of interesting people. Some with more diverse personalities than others. But all genuinely, great people at heart. Because of what it is I do, I suppose, as well and to an extent the route [be dum! ] I have chosen, I get to meet those who others would call mentalist in most cases, sense of humour in mind… you’d be perfectly correct in your synopsis. To the point, I met Hazel in South Africa. Great girl already you say? Damn rightly so. She sent me a mail. Art exhibition this weekend. Mullingar. Not that far away. I took a look at her work. I was impressed. I liked it. Anyhow here’s what the Hazel had to say….. Some of you might not live miles away from Mullingar…. I am having an art exhibition this Friday 4th at 8pm in the Greville Arms Hotel Mullingar and the exhibition continues through the weekend (Saturday … There’s more

Top 15 Children’s TV Themes

Inspired by a twitter message by a certain Mr. Darragh Doyle, where he announced the contentious notion that Fraggle Rock was the greatest theme song from a children’s TV show, I have decided to share my Top 10 15 Children’s TV Themes. Now these are a personal choice and I’m sure many of you will disagree with me. The collection reflects the fact that I was a child of both the 80′s and 90′s and have a fond affection for shows from that time. Number 15: Pole Position 80′s synths and drums were never more effectively used.

S.O.S

Forget about Thierry Henry, forget about Sepp Blatter. Floods, Bishops and Biffo have left us with more than our fair share of doom and gloom. So we, as a nation, need something to get behind. We need something to cheer. So how about this? An Irish man has a shot at the WWE Title! Yes folks you read it right. A Dublin born, fluent Gaeilgóir, with a shock of red hair. Skin as pale as the driven snow, 6 ft 6, 280 lbs, his name is Sheamus O’ Shaunessy, The Celtic Warrior. He is the living embodiment of Ireland. He sang in the Palestrina Choir until the age of thirteen, as part of which he appeared on the Late Late Toy Show. He also played GAA for Erins Isle in Finglas and in later years was a personal security guard for Bono don’t ya know. He has been a two-time … There’s more

Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty

Granny O’Grimm is an Irish-made animated short film, short-listed for an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 2010. They have just put the full version online and it is wonderful. A beautifully made bedtime story with an Irish flavour, I love it! Granny O’Grimm certainly lives up to her name. ‘Granny’ is voiced by Kathleen O’Rourke who is also the writer of the short. Nicky Phelan directed and Brown Bag Films produced the film. Enjoy!

Down by the Bayou 3 - The Princess and the Frog update

Walt Disney Pictures have unveiled a new featurette for their forthcoming traditional animated tale The Princess and the Frog. Now we here at Culch are always very excited when any news on a Disney movie comes out, but most especially when it’s news concerning that venerated institutions return to the animated style which made it famous. This new film clip talks about the magic of villain Dr. Facilier (voiced by Keith David) and Mama Odie (voiced by Jennifer Lewis). The movie which is opening on December 11th in the US won’t be seen in Ireland until February 5th, 2010.

Snow Patrol concerts in Dublin

Snow Patrol are playing at the Olympia Theatre on December 2nd & 3rd. The ticket prices are €56.80 and €62.70… quite dear given the current economic situation. I caught them in Boston a couple of years ago. I like their ‘A Hundred Million Suns’ album, my favourite song on that being ‘The Lightning Strike’. This video below is a partial recording of the song from their concert at the Gate Theatre in Dublin last year. Their playing of the song here has a harder edge. Their are quite a few other concerts coming up this December in Ireland, but internet searching can only get me so far .. so let me know what concerts you might be attending, I’d be glad to hear about them.

Sweary’s Jaw

Surreptituously calling Leona Lewis … well, kinda crap … so you don’t have to. Dark days are upon us. Now, I know I started last week’s Jaw with a very similar statement, but dark days do tend to drag on, so the sentiment remains. I am also of the very obvious opinion that silly celebrity news - pointless crap for the sake of it - can be a lifesaver when all around you is doom, gloom and bellyaches. But the emphasis must be on silly, which is why we are more likely to cheer on the consciously awful shenanigans of X Factor’s John and Edward, than the unconsciously awful uber-sincerity of its rising star Danyl Johnson, for example. This focus on the daft antics of esteemed celebrities may consequently come across a bit mean-spirited; why focus on lapses in a celebrity’s judgement, when we could focus on achievements, awards, great … There’s more
